Getting the garbage can to,the street?

We have a driveway about 1/2 mile long, our can has wheels and all we do is place the can on the ball hitch of the truck. Right in the middle of the trash can right below the handle is a spot where the ball fits perfect, I can pull it about 10mph with no problems, if the can is so full that the lip doesn't close fully, I just tie a rope around the can.
My wife is actually is the one that figured it out, LOL, I use to strain my back putting it in the bed of the truck.

I am handicapped from a construction accident. My lane is 300+ feet long.
100# black lab just loves dragging the can either on grass or snow. Dogs love having jobs.
He has the safety vest because he used to come to construction sites with me.

Hello,
I made a low small trailer so I could roll my trash can up onto the bed. I made a wood ramp that in hinged from the back of the trailer and can be folded down onto the ground. Since the trash can has wheels, I just drag it up the short ramp, up onto the bed. I then bungee the handle of the trash can to the handle that I built on the front of the trailer. My neighbor says the trailer looks like a chariot !!!! I also made the trailer long enough to put the recycle can behind, on recycling weeks. I hook this up behind my 250 ATV and off I go. It's a little over a half mile to the hard road where our trash gets picked up. It works great and I enjoy riding my ATV.

I have about 12" loop of chain on the handles of my bins that I simply loop over my trailer hitch and slowly drag the bins to the road side.
I have a hill on the drive where I simply lose traction if I try to haul the bins by hand.
Our bins stand about 4' tall and roll on 12" wheels.
Due to critters I have bungee cords to keep lids closed which prevents spillage while towing the bins.

Our newest problem is that the city wants the bins to be hidden from view (visual pollution) other than on pickup days subject to $100. fines.
This May we go to 3 bins, trash, recycle, compost.
They have hired a trash policeman.

I should add that we have a long gravel/rock drive, so pulling the garbage can would likely wear it out pretty quickly dragging it down the driveway. The Cansporter eliminates that problem. I used to use the bucket on my tractor, but I was having to get the tractor out of the barn, which is also quite a way from the house. Since I keep the Gator in the garage at the house, it also saves time.

My Gator is an XUV 825i model, so i did have to buy an 18" receiver hitch extension to give the Cansporter enough space to hook up to the garbage can, but I needed to buy one anyway to make it easier to hook up small trailers.

I made a free floating extension to use with the old garden cart.

It is funny how big the cart looked behind the garden tractor and now, how small it is behind the Ranger.

I need to add a skid plate under the ball.

Cold in Louisiana hauling out the trash ?? Come up here for a winter !! :)

Guess everything is relative to where you live.

Yea, a lawn cart behind the utv would be good. Just depends on how big your garbage can is.

I had somebody tell me a funny story today. He replaced the ball with an angle iron. He cocks the can back and hooks it over the angle and straps to 2 hooks on the bed rail.

He said one morning he loaded and headed to work. He got about a 1/2 mile down the hard road when he heard something dragging. Then he remembered that he hadn't stopped to take it off. He said it took him hours to clean up blown newspaper and styrofoam peanuts. It was Febuary and freezing cold. So what ever method you use, don't forget to leave it at the end of the driveway.

More than a few times I have seen cars with a trash bag sitting on a roof rack as absentminded drivers forget it is there.

With our 3 bin system about to start the city has hired garbage police to assure trash is properly assorted and cans etc washed with labels removed.
Pizza boxes not in recycle but in trash etc. Then next will come fines if you leave a bin by the roadside beyond the prescribed window period.

Bins will now be dumped every 2 weeks alternatively with combustible one weekly but monthly in winter.
Naturally the city presumes that coons and bears wont be hungry between pickup dates.
They say that fines will vigorously applied as of this May which will be a serious problem for seniors living in condos on hilly streets that have stairs on one side leading up to their entrance way and across the street from the curb you walk down to your front door.
Maybe they will need to introduce a 'handicap exemption' tag system.

Mayor says that a good neighborly gesture will be the way to go.
I don't mind giving the occasional helping hand but certainly do not want a year round responsibility that incurs fines and spilled garbage pickup also to remember when you combine take out and retrieval it will soon add up to quite time consuming especially in scattered rural settings.
Condos being side by side would be feasible but not hilly side streets/roads with long drives.
While this would be a good source of income for teens (as paper routes used to be) today's entitled teen feels it is below him to do these menial tasks.

today's entitled teen feels it is below him to do these menial tasks.

It's been my observation that pretty much ** anyone ** who isn't accustomed to dealing with their own refuse,,,, feels entitled to have "someone else" do it for them. There should be no surprise teens feel that way, they go with what they learn from their parents. It can be a tough pill to swallow when your own teen does it and you have to look in the mirror.

We are the only residents on the road we live ... so the road is essentially part of our driveway. It's probably about 1000' from the other road down to the house.

We were already paying for "backdoor" service due to the above.

This winter the wife took the trash can at the house and moved it up to the shop - which is about halfway to the road - with the other one.

Wasn't a problem this winter, with the 'coons hibernating ... but now that warmer weather is here, I'll have to add some type of latch to keep 'em out.

Now if I could get the wife to leave the trash cans alone ... instead, she insists on "putting them out" (moving them 30' closer to the road) every trash day ... despite the fact that they set outside the shop, right next to the driveway.

Like we don't already have enough work to do ... :confused2:
