There is no real world reason as to why i want more HP,Key word being want not need. I have been running my tractor for my landscape business on the side for a couple of years now. I have a tiller, BB, loader, and a T5 Harley Power Rake. In two years of running the tractor i have always been able to do the job and do it well. The physical size of the tractor is perfect for my application. I was just thinking wouldnt it be great to have more HP in the same size frame. My equipment is put away for the winter and my mind is racing. I live in Alaska and winter comes early and lasts long.
I was thinking if i could get 30 HP instead of 24 HP. Why not. I am not sure if going from 56 to 60 HP for an example there would be a noticible difference. But, on the lower end i would think there would be a usefull difference. I could deal with a little extra smoke as long as its not like the tractor pulls i see on tv. lol

My thoughts exactly.

If you are just looking for a bit of more HP then I would play with the pump timing and more fuel a bit and thats it. If you add a turbo, compressor or what ever to give actually boost, then you gotta be carefull with lube, and boost temperature. Anyhow playing with the fuel amount and the timing, you should be able to get that what you want, but you burn more fuel. After that I would look into injectros and so on...

Back when I bought my TC29D, the 25, 29 and 33 all appeared to be the same tractor, just different HP. Once while talking to one of the friendly mechanics at the dealer, he told me the only difference was simply an adjustment on the injection pump. He said he could get into really big trouble if he were to do it for anyone though. Later on I noticed a funny thing on the injection pump. It is a cylinder about the diameter of a cigar tube and about two inches long. It just spins around freely and seems maybe to be a cover for something. If you've ever seen one of those sleeves that the cable company puts over the end of coaxial cable ends to prevent theft, it reminds me of one of those. I've wondered if this thing covers the mysterious adjustment I was told about. I wouldn't mind bumping my 29 up to a 33!

The engines in the TC29 and TC33 are not the same. In fact, even though the two tractors are identical, and the two engines are identical, the 33 has slightly more displacement. You can find this in the manuals. I think the manufacturers do a good job at matching horsepower to the frame designs. But I know what you are saying also. You can never have too much hp! I think its important to size your tractor to the tasks it will be performing. I could of course use more hp sometimes, but I would not be willing to increase the tractor's size to get it. So I will just stick to my TC29D. I have yet to find a task that it didnt handle with ease.

Typhoon,

I checked my manual and you are absolutely correct. I did notice however that the 25 and 29 have identical bore, stroke and displacement. Only the 33 specs were slightly different. So what the mechanic said might be true for 25s and 29s.

Roy,

Sorry I have not replied sooner...been really busy. To answer the question about the "mystery" cover on the injection pump. As we all know diesels are having to meet tougher EPA regs. The larger cover is some sort of tamper-proof cover that only can be removed by a "certified" (or whatever) injection pump service tech. That cover, covers the max fuel adjustment screw. Below (or above, can't recall) there is another smaller plastic cover that covers the max idle speed adjustment.

Of course, it's put there so no one will tamper with the factory settings as they are set to meet these stupid emission standards. Who knows the legalities and such of changing these?

So, for conversational purposes, one could take a pair of needle nose vise-grip pliers and crush the tube in the middle causing it to pop right off. Then, said person could losen the jamb nut and adjust the amount of fuel being injected. Running the bolt counter-clock wise will increase the fuel, clock-wise will lessen the fuel. It's backwards to what you might think. Then tighten the jamb nut. This "hypothetical person" that made these changes will enjoy a little more power with some slight increase in a little greyish-black smoke. Furthermore, said person did not change the max. idle screw to over-rev the engine.

I suppose as someone said before in this thread, you can get into changing the pump timing which involves changing shims, etc., and changing injector sizes to get even more performance.

And of course, with increased fuel, air, blah, blah comes more heat and wear and tear, blah, blah. (Had to cover that before someone else did.)

(BTW, I'm no diesel mech., and really have no clue as to what I'm talking about. So, I guess I would talk to someone who really knows about this stuff!)

Just checked the online parts guide

The TC18 & 21 have the same pump & injectors. The TC24 & 26 have different numbers.

That cover may be coming off soon... After using the 82HP Volvo hoe, I'm really feeling underpowered.

Deere has really started a HP "coldwar" in the class II and III sizes - the 3720 with 44HP (turbo) at 2,900# The 4720 with 58HP at 3,700#   NH is still kind of a contender in the class I size @ 26HP although the Kubota B3030 is 30HP at 1,800#.

Now you are getting me going to Hazmat! Maybe a custom ground camshaft, intercooler and more boost would be in order to give my 55 some more umpf? Oyyy... I am just calculating out, how fast I could mow or snowblow etc! ;-D
