Well maybe it just depends on who the manufacturer of the filter is...? Like I said, I have been washing mine for 6 months and they are perfectly fine. They are $10 each though so maybe the quality is higher.

Pushing_Tin,

I just washed it in soap and water and it looks fine, seems to have survived without coming apart. I'll test it on the saw the next time I cut wood.

I wish my filter were only $10. Mine costs $24

I believe I have the same filter as you on my 028. There is a slot on one side of the plastic of the filter for a screwdriver so you can break it in half. The Stihl dealer near me said to just wash it in dish detergent and water. I have a second filter that I keep clean and swap it out as needed.

I learned something the other day that I did not know. My other Stihl chainsaw is a 230 and has been slowly losing power over the past few weeks. I checked the filter/spark plug and those were ok. It finally lost all power so I took it in to get serviced. They tried to start it and said it was a clogged muffler. There is a screen (I'm guessing spark arrestor) that was completely clogged. I cleaned it with a torch and wire brush, reinstalled it and it ran like new. Never had that happen on another saw before.
