Hey all, I've been looking on and off at the LS tractors for quite a while. I've looked and priced others and always come back to the LS. Finally decided with help from the wife that I just need to stop thinking about it and buy it. Wife reminded me that the tractor will be used all around the yard and farm and that I keep getting older and ought to get the HST...plus I think she wants to drive it too!! The dealer almost made me feel weird about getting this tractor in the HST. Great dealer but says he just sells very few that way. Am I missing something? Will there really be a significant loss of power with the HST? As mentioned the uses will vary but plenty of cleaning up around the farm and brush hogging and mostly weekend work. I considered going up to the R4047H for the extra hp but I don't think I plan to work it that hard. I plan to cut about 8 to 10 acres with a 5 to 6 ft. brush hog on rolling hills.... Is this tractor going to have enough power for this?

Couple of questions I forgot to ask the dealer: He didn't have an HST to drive and I was curious of the pedal arrangement on the R4041H. Is there Cruise control when doing long stretch of mowing.

Price quoted is $21,500 for the R041H w/ FEL, Rim-guard and delivery (40 to 50 miles). Seems a little higher than I wanted but is still the best amongst any of the dealers I would consider. Seems like he would offer the best service after the sale. I've seen better prices on this site but so just curious what you guys think. (Said he would sell me an R4047 Shuttle for $500 more...)

thanks again for all the good reads and pics. Really appreciate this site!!

I was in the same boat as you. Also looking to bush hog/mow 8-10 acres on some rolling hills and use the tractor to help build a new home in the future (read lots of loader work forward and backward). In that case I went with a R4047H. My dealer also did not have one on the lot and said he sold mostly shuttle shifts, I found that strange as well for this size and style of tractor. Who knows, maybe tractornynet does represent a "normal" subset of buyers. I feel like most folks have 4041H and 40407H's on this site. I test drove both shuttle shift transmissions but bought the HST site unseen.

That being said, the HST is GREAT! I did a lot of box blade and loader work this weekend, it was a pleasure to be able to change direction that easy! On my steepest hills I had to go slow in M range or I couls shift down to L range and go full speed with the bush-hog, most times I just let up on the pedal and went slower in M to save a shift. Ends up moving you at about the same speed, motor never started to bog though. Oh, and the shift from L-M-H is super easy and smooth. You do have to be stopped but the lever just falls right into place. I've driven a few different brands where shifting between ranges its hard and take some sort of unearthly skill to make happen smoothly.

It does have a cruise control button, just get going the speed you want and push the button on the dash, its just like going down the highway in a car.

I paid 24K taxes includes for my 4047H a few months ago so a 2,500 difference for the 4041H doesn't seem too off base. If it were me, I'd get the 4047H for that small of a difference and enjoy more power and enjoy the feeling that your not pushing the tractor as hard. Piece of mind means a lot.

Ok hopefully i can answer all the questions here. The 4041h has the twin pedal and should have cruise. I just sold one today. It should have the power to do what you want it to do. The thing with the 47 i was told by my rep that they are out of stock. The reason is that ls is switching to tier 4 clean burn engines. So what ls did was stocked up to full cap of the tier 3 and once they are gone you will have to get the tier 4. The R4041 is one of my best sellers. This is only the second hydro i sold but im not worried about it. You do have power loss mostly its between 25 - 35%. If you want some reserve and can find a 47 hydro you can but the 41 should do what your asking.

Exactly why I bought mine when I did, at that point I was told there were 3 Tier 3's left at the warehouse.

Also the reason I went with the 47 over the 41. Although, i really don't think its that big of a deal. Its only 3-4hp differene at the PTO with a shuttle va. hydro. And I don't think you really loose 25-35% to the ground, maybe 10-15%. That arguement aside, the old addage of "you'll run out of traction before HP" does apply with R4 tires.

I bought a R4041H last week and put 6.5 hrs. on it over the weekend, love it so far. I will be using mine for land clearing, firewood, and swamping. I paid 21,500. with Rim Guard and delivery, and the dealer (Robinson Equipment) welded two hooks on the bucket for me. Very nice experience with the Dealer. I wanted to make sure I got one with the tier 3 engine. I've only owned mine for a week but I think I made a good decision. The thing that won me over was the Loader capacity, much higher than the other tractors I was looking at. Go ahead Buy One!

I pull the trigger on my John Deeres all the time. I stand on the two 3pt lift links with the bipod laying on the top of the cab. This gives you a shoot downward aim and a nice, steady, comfortable and accurate rest from the canopy.

Don't forget your earmuffs and keep your mouth closed. My 50BMG will suck the air out of your ears via throat if you forget.

(I probably ought to get a picture of this to show how its done properly)....

I also purchased a 4041H near the end of May this year, and I now have approx. 152 hours. Most hours near idle.

Back in February I picked up a 4041 shuttle, mostly because the dealer was recommending it over the HST. It only took me about 50 hours to realize I wanted the hydro, so I traded in and traded up to the 4047h HST. I love HST, and I prefer it over the shuttle 80% of the time. I mainly use my tractor for the loader, and then occasionally use it for field work or grading. But there's no question, a gear tractor puts more power to the ground than hydro. I honestly felt that my 4041 shuttle put more power to the wheels than my 4047 hydro. But again, the remaining 80 percent of the time the hydro is much preferred over the shuttle.

But I am very happy with this tractor. I'm up to around 130'ish hours now and the tractor has been perfect. (As expected for a new tractor) For the minor $$ jump, I feel the 4047 is a worthy upgrade. In my experience, I feel the 4047 engine runs smoother than the 4041... And apparently they use the same engine with different tweaking, maybe different injectors.
