I just bought some acreage with a 1.5 acre pond--should be some good fishing for my boys. There are currently three geese that live there. I like them, but they sure make a mess (they must eat a lot!). Is it true that they will help control the cottonmouth population around my pond?

Hi,

We have had some geese for the last fifteen years or so...

They seem to keep the pond cloudy due to washing at the edge...

I don't know about snakes, but they sure don't keep the frogs in check.

All in all, we like our geese. We accept the muddy water...

Guess this really doesn't answer your question...

Somehow I doubt they would have any effect on the snake population....

I didn't look at your profile for a location, but,

Are the geese canadian? In some parts of Norther VA they are now considered "pest" animals.

Plus, most of them geese are south these days.

IMHO, I consider them nusiance fowl.

Not Canadian geese...just geese. Like big ducks.

Ha, ha, ha!

Big ducks...except while they are young and don't know better! Never saw a duck attack like a goose! I guess you have to have owned geese for a while to appreciate the difference... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A guy I used to work with coined the term "Flying rats" for the Canadian variety...I think he was a golfer... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Geese are noisy and mostly a pain, IMHO. A few years ago, my father-in-law was down at his lakefront feeding a bunch of ducks and geese, and there was a large white one that was pretty protective of him. He jumped on me as soon as I got close enough and I grabbed it by the throat. I then took it and walked out on the pier and dropped it in the water. He wouldn't come near me anymore, but would stand there and squawk at me pretty loud.
