Thanks for all the info, guys. I finally gave up and took it to a mechanic. There was oil leaking into the bell housing causing the clutch to stick. The mechanic opened it up and put new gaskets in and maybe a new clutch. He wasn't there when I went to the shop to pay. The receipt lists a clutch kit so I think he did something to the clutch as well.

This was a bigger job than I realized. The loader had to be removed and the tractor split in half. Not cheap either.

yep.. that's what i suspected back in post 12.

many times the seal and gasket are under 10$ and the clutch.. at least for single stage small ones are under 400.. the rest is labor fo rthe split ( or more for a dual clutch.. etc.. )

You were dead on. The clutch kit was just under $400. The bearings and gaskets were about $50. The labor was $1,100.00
