I understand the power ratings and such but what are the physical differences in the boxes? Bolt patterns Im guessing and shaft sizes? I bought an OLDER brushhog unit cheap and am cleaning it all up (unknown make, model, etc) and the gearbox seems large (for a 5') so I was hoping to get an idea of the rating by the physical sizes if they do differ. I don't know if it is a light, medium or heavy duty but I would personally call it medium duty by the reinforcements on the deck and the thickness of the deck itself.
Thanks

since it's an older 5' machine.. i would treat it like light or medium duty anyway.. unless it looks built like a tank.. i wouldn't try to use it for a tank.

mosrt machines spinning a 5; hog are gonna be 20-30 hp..

I am going to be running it on a 3700 Kubota so only about 30 PTO HP. so I figure I am safe either way. I am just trying to figure out the shaft sizes and box sizes between the two. I also find used gearboxes from time to time (used) and would like to understand the differences a bit more.
thanks!

The higher HP gearboxes have a "Diamond" mount 4 bolt pattern (That would have 1 hole directly under the input shaft). The smaller gearboxes have a "Square bolt mount pattern (4 bolts, 1 on each corner). Hope this helps. Ken Sweet

Thanks guys - the diamond shape makes it a lot easier to figure it out very quickly. I am really getting into buying and fixing implements up and also building new ones - sort of a new hobby for me and my 10 year old son (and sometime daughter if she feels what we are doing is somehow "crafty" - like painting.)
THANKS
