Thanks all for the info, I may be being think but are people referring to the bit that appears to be sticking out on the circular mechanism?

If so I am not so sure because it has welding all round the base as if it is meant to be like that. Also if the pin had come out would I not have issues with all the ranges?

Thanks,

The pin is what "connects" arm with shaft for gear selection....

Just tap pin back in and see if it fixes problem.... Besure when doing it pin is aligned with hole in shaft .... Report back....

Roll pin:
The black pin that is pointed towards the camera in the middle-left side of your picture. The pin looks like it goes through a hole that is in the bottom of the shifting lever arm, where the arm slides over the horizontal shaft.

The pin has paint on the first 1/2 inch and the rest of the pin has no paint, drive it back in until you see only paint, that is were the pin needs be.

Hi All,

I had another look and the black circular part that sticks out is actually welded to the main cylinder so that is not a pin that can be pushed in. I do not know if there is anything in it or not because I used a long punch and hammered it through as far as I go and there has been no change.

Still only have the two gear ranges available instead of the two.

Thanks,

Kevin

Sorry, yes that should be two instead of the three.

Which is why I was doubtful if was something like a pin because I thought that would be an all or nothing job.

Hi Kevin,

This may not be an exact diagram of your situation but maybe it will help what I'll describe below.

The "roll pin" item #11 in the diagram is what I believe you said you used a long punch on to drive back into the arm assembly (item #10) in the diagram. In the center of item 10 there should be a solid shaft with a hole in it that the roll pin would go through and come out the other side of the arm assembly. When this solid shaft rotates, it is changing your speed ranges. If the holes in the arm assembly and the shaft in its center were aligned when you drove the roll pin it should have not taken "too much force" Another possibility is the roll pin has sheared off in the solid shaft, but that seems unlikely in that you are able to shift into 2 of your 3 ranges.

My approach would be to try and pull the roll pin out and confirm it is still the proper length and that you can make sure the hole in the solid shaft is aligned with the hole in the arm assembly. Is there anyway you can feel the opposite side of the arm assembly to confirm the roll pin is sticking out, meaning it has gone straight through the arm assembly and the solid shaft in its center and come out the other side?

Like Dale said earlier, that pin has to line up with a hole in the inner shaft. If it isn稚 lined up with the hole in the shaft you can hammer on it 奏il the cows come home and it won稚 move. Also, your photo is reasonably high resolution and I sure don稚 see any welding on that pin.

If the shift arm is only partly slipping on the shaft, friction could move it enough so that you have two speeds but not 3.

Can you see under the fender and watch to see if the arm moves as the shaft rotates? Maybe get someone to move the lever while you are watching the shaft and arm.

Also, you should be able to move it with some solid tapping. Hammering is just about guaranteed to break something.

But did end of pin show on other side of collar on selector arm....
