Gear or Hydrostatic Transmissions for Compact Utility Tractors?

I always read SR's post and agree there is lots of good info in most of them. No one should take these gear vs.. hydro threads to seriously.

I think the "noise" about the "noise" of a hydrostatic transmission on this forum is more annoying than the actual "noise" of the hydrostatic transmission itself. Personally I don't hear the "noise" until someone on here mentions it. Then I listen and I say ya there is some "noise". I guess I can just tune those sounds out and listen for what I need to hear. My wife tells me I can be very focused only she doesn't say it quite like that! :)

Isn't that I said in post #5??

Here's what I said: "It's all about the skill level of the operator!"

That seemed to make some folks mad, when "I" said it... lol

I stand by post #5.

SR

I doubt many disagreed with, "It's all about the skill level of the operator!"

But then you threw in "IF you are too lazy to learn how to use a gear drive tractor, then perhaps a hydro is for you..."

Same here...that "lazy" comment didn't sit well with me neither.

One thing I learned a long time ago is you never argue about politics and religion...
On here it's hydro versus geared...

While gear owners can set a cruise control with the hand throttle it also changes the PTO speed. My cruise only changes ground speed, not PTO RPM.
For logging with the grapple (lots of fwd and back with ups, downs and grapple on the thumb) I prefer a hydro. For ground implements, I like a geared tractor.

As for a horsepower (too much horse power for hydro...) Big tractors have had hydro for years. By big I mean bigger than 150 horsepower. They are all going to IVT now for ground control and traction.

So ultimately this is one of those areas like bourbon, speakers, and tractor color... A man should never tell another man how to drink his bourbon, which speakers are best, or what color tractor to buy. If asked, a man should simply say what he likes about his choice, not why his choice is "best."

Well said, but my Bourbon days are a fond distant memory! As the TV show goes: "Different Strokes for Different Folks".

Yup, I stand by that too. lol lol

BUT, I never said it was WRONG for you to be too lazy! ha ha ha

Not buying it, the word lazy itself is derogatory and I see nothing to be gained and much to be lost by being negative towards other operators and their choices. That may well be your opinion, but facts do not support it. There are many on TBN who use tractors professionally and use HSTs and a drive through many farm lots where people use tractors every day will often have an HST. Our renters use 7000 and 8000 Series John Deeres on all heir farms, but when precise work is needed they have a 4610 eHydro.

I guess you have indoor plumbing because you're too lazy to walk outside to the outhouse.
