Gear lube for brush hog

What is the best viscosity gear lube to use for a brush hog gearbox? It is an older 5' model. Not sure of the manufacturer. Thanks for any help.

Some manuals call for 90WT gear oil. Some say 120WT. I've seen several old mowers with leaky gear box seals using pourable grease or even regular "axle grease".

Welcome to TBN ! I have had 3 rotary cutters: Woods M-40 (40"), Tebben TC96-40 (40"), and a Tebben TC94-500 (60"). Recommendations for gearbox lube were always 80W-90 gear lube. Jay

On an older unit.. I'd use 85-140, unless i knew the specs called for 80w90.

If it leaks a little, use JD cornhead (pourable) grease.

If ya can't get it, any 0# grease will work... or just get most of the gear oil out and pump in regular tube grease, and let it mix with the remaining gear oil to make a sticky flowable mess..

I'd use 85-140. It'll be less viscous at startup than 80-90w that most specify and be more effective in getting lube swirled around quicker.

why are there so mach variation on price on brush cutters...i see on ebay some are buy now for $750 and some are much cheaper....i have a 4 ft and a 5 ft and don't know the name on either...i don't see a brand name anywhere on them...both work properly and i was thinking of selling one of them? any thoughts?

some light duty, some medium duty, some heavy duty, Heavy duty being priced higher. Some will have higher rated gear boxes.
