OK I have a light weight rotorary cutter and a Land Pride finishing mower. I would like to change the oil in them but I see no drain plug. Do you change the oil on these gear boxs or just top off as needed?

Pply typicall either suck the oil out OR use a FEL to tip the mower on its side so it drains out..

On my rotary cutter I can take the top of the gear box off.. then i use a syringe, made for measuring 2 cy oil, and suck the oil out.. You can get about 6 oz per suck, slow but effective..

BTW - my syringe is also good for putting new gear oil in differentials - clean before and after using so you dont contaminate anything..

On the 403 rotary cutter which has no drain plug, I tip it up on the side of the drain hole supported by blocks and with a couple straps from a lift beam in the shop. Turns the fill hole into the drain hole. That position also allows me to service the blades and other under the deck pieces. Do the same with my tiller kinda, hanging it from the torque tube. Makes oil changes easy and tine maintenance. Dont have pics of the mower on its side but here is a pic of the tiller hung for maintenance.

I am certain there is a drain plug on that tiller. It's hard to see, but take another good look underneath, up front.

If the RFM has a drain/run out plug on the side than you can do this. I take the mower and put the drain plug side up against something, like a wall. Then just tip the mower up a little with the FEL and catch the old oil in a small container or such. This gets most of the oil out, and it's simple enough to do at least once a year.

NAPA, or just about any decent auto parts store will have suction guns. Draw out old oil, then replace with new.

Yep there is a drain plug knight, but it was easier to replace-tighten loose tine bolts, straighten a few bent tine flanges and drain the oil all in this position. If its time for gear box oil change seasonal or just that much use, I have found it a very productive to check out the rest of the implement. Just share'n the ideas with passgass55 man,:D

They dont put a drain plug on because, absent contamination the change is not needed and omitting saves money. The oil doesnt wear out but water will cause big trouble. If the oil is milky change it. Absent contamination, if the lubricant level is maintained these gearboxes will not fail in our lifetime.
