gc2410 tachometer issue

my 2410 sat for the better part of 6 weeks, after which i noticed a blowdown on the edge of my property. so i decided to just put the brush forks on and move it rather than cut it up with the chainsaw.

i started the tractor, let it warm up for about 20 minutes (-5c) and then did the job. i hadn't driven the tractor for a while so i decided to take a tour of the property before putting it away.

i got to the far end of the lot 750' ish and all of the sudden there was a terrible howling/screeching from under the hood. i had a quick look at the dash as i was reaching for the key to shut it off, and noticed the tachometer was maxed right out and vibrating, even though the engine was still running the same speed (about 1600rpm).

i shut the machine off, flipped up the hood, turned the fan to see that neither it or the alternator were seized up, jiggled the wires leading to the dash (just in case it was a short or something like that) and then i realized the tach drive was mechanical (never noticed that before) so i jiggled that around a bit too.

closed the hood, started it back up, no problem.

this happened two days ago, yesterday i put about another 1/2 hour on the machine... no issues.

i'm guessing it had something to do with the tachometer drive, but i wouldn't mind knowing exactly what happened.

I've had this happen several times when it's cold outside. If the oil is cold and thick, it will happen. It's done it for two years now with no ill effects that I can find.

seems kind of odd that it would wait 40 minutes to do it. what do you do when it happens, how do you stop it?

What you can do is take the cable off the tack as well as take it off the motor.Pull out the center cable[it's very wiggly] clean off all the grease that you can.Put the cable back in and pull it out a couple times and wipe off the excess grease.Finally reinstall the center part and put on a good quality litihum low temp grease.Just kinda have the grease in your hand or cloth and push the cable back in.Sometimes turning the cable as you slide it back in helps.On another note if the cable is dry it'll do the same thing.Another thing to use is a graphite lube as well.That'll correct your problem.We used to do this on car and truck speedometers that were acting up.Larry

i put a couple more hours on it this week, no more trouble. i'll have a closer look at it in the spring. i would think 143 hours is a bit early to be needing this sort of service... maybe the grease was just thick and a chunk bound up or something like that.

Mine has done this a couple of times as well (under 100hrs on machine). I don't think the issue is the cable binding, if the cable were binding or stopping the tachometer would read low or stop completely not max out and squeal. I think it is something to do with the tach head itself but haven't had time to look at it.

well, the same thing came up again today.

machine sat through fairly cold weather for a full week, plugged it in to plow some snow, ran it for 1/2 hour or so, tachometer started howling and bouncing of the max on the redline side.

took the cable of the at the tach head, dumped quite a bit of 3in1 oil down it, started the machine at low rpm and poured a few more slugs down there.

gave the tach head 3 good shots where the cable plugs in.

I actually took mine apart where it goes into the tach and found that a bit of moisture, which I think might have been freezing and binding up the gears when it was around 0 degress outside. Anyways, I clean everything up really nice and have had no other problems.

I know this is an old thread, but, the same thing happened to my wife while I was out 'truckin' this week.

She called the dealer, but, he hadn't made it here yet..........so when I got home at 1 pm. , I looked up this old thread.

I removed the cable from the tachometer head, and found an oily cable end. So I disconnected the other end from the engine, and found another oily end.I removed the cable from the housing, and found an oily cable.

I found no moisture at either end.

So I wiped the cable with a rag, soaked the cable with 80-90 gear oil, also sprayed inside the tach head with chain lube, put it all back together, and ran the tractor for about an hour. Worked fine.

Told dealer not to come up, that i'll try my method before we send it in for warranty work(I informed him of this thread).

I'm going to try it again in the morning, but temps are quite warm here now,(52 as I type this)but I expect to find that it is ok.

My 2610 just did this yesterday while clearing snow. Funny thing is it was fine for the first 45 minutes. I emailed the dealer and they say this tends to happen in cold weather. It was about 8 degrees when it happened. Throttled down and it stopped. About 10 minutes later it did it again. I throttled down again and after this it was fine the rest of the time I was working. Dealer said to take the cable off the tach if it bothered me and when it warms back up it should be fine. This would indicate to me the source of the noise is the tach itself. I have to move some wood today and it's still pretty cold, so if it happens I'll pull the cable off the tach and see if it stops.

Mine did it for the first time the other day, had tractor for 3 years and no problem. Started as soon as I started the tractor and quit after I started to loosen the cable nut. tighten nut back up and it has been fine ever since.

as you can see by the video, the problem came back, and continues to come back.

have any of you guys ever washed your tractor, or do you leave it outside in the rain in the fall?

maybe the seal around the dash cover is prone to leaking?

Do wash my tractor but do not leave it outside. Has only happened once in 3yrs of ownership. I have never seen any water in the area where the cable attaches.

Dealer is telling me tach and throttle cable issues are popular in winter. If that's the case, you would think AGCO would have this fixed by now.

Same issue with my 2610. I thought I blew a hydro line. The temp was in the single digits and the tach was stuck to the right (high side). I kept the rpm low and the noise disappeared.

Anyone ever find a solution to this? It happened today, but not the other 2 days I blew snow. It was pretty cold today. I don’t like unhooking the cable because it stops the hour meter too. But that’s the only thing that stops it. Hooked the cable back up when I was done and it stayed working correctly until I parked the tractor in the shed.
