I can't understand why Massey doesn't include a cover for the mid PTO. I would think that all sorts of dirt and debris might get in there and damage the internal splines.

Also, what are you suppose to do with the mid PTO when not in use? It looks like it could get damaged just hanging there. Is it supposed to attach up to a bracket or something when not in use?

Sorry for all these questions, but I didn't get a manual for my MMM. The dealer is sending it to me though.

Take that end of the shaft off! There should be just a small shaft that comes out from the transmission. Nothing should be hanging.

^^^Don't leave ANYTHING attached to the male end sticking out of the tranny, if you don't have an attachment on using it!! You could do some expensive damage! Not yelling at you, just want to make it clear that you don't do that.;)

So do I have take the universal apart to remove the yoke, or does the yoke and universal just pull out together?

Up at the rear of the shaft, towards the tractor, there is a ring at the end of the pto shaft. Pull the ring towards the front of the tractor and then pull and slide the shaft off the tractor.

DC3- here's a pic of the MMM removed, with its driveshaft still attached. That's the way I keep it during the summer, but for winter storage (on edge, with some wheels), I remove the driveshaft/U-joint and store it elsewhere. (That's where the "Mower Deck" comes in....)

Oh, yeah-- you can see the quick-release ring at the end of the driveshaft on the right; that's what Wacky was talking about.

Where did you get the wheels to store it on edge? Are they the ones that attach to the deck?

Instead of removing the end of the shaft to store over the winter. Remove the left belt guard and rotate the shaft and put the universal joint under the guard. It makes a great place to keep it from falling off or getting in the way when moving it. I have also removed the nuts that hold the belt guards on and put a little bend in the guard and the front clip holds the guard on nicely with out them. It make greasing the deck easier.

MMM nut less belt guard.

Hmmmm... "nutless belt guard".... OK, I won't go there!:laughing:

Seems this thread is generating some rather interesting thoughts!

But that does sound like a great idea, tx2310! I've always hated having to remove those nuts to lube the thing! (Got any pics of that "little bend"?)
