Hi all,

This is my first thread on this site. I am pretty active in other location/interest forums, but I am buying my first tractor, so here we go!

I have been shopping around on the internet for new and used units, as well as visiting the local dealers too. After some demos by very understanding dealers, my never-ending questions, and some test rides as well, I have decided on a Massey Ferguson for my first.

We have about a 1/3 mile long asphalt drive that I mow the sides of now. I am also working on a circle turn around near the house, to make easier use of our pull behind camper. We have 30 acres of mostly wooded, hilly old tobacco farm land that is tiered on the steeper areas. My first use for the new tractor, will be mowing (semi-rough) and grooming the turn around drive. From what everyone says I won't have much trouble finding other uses once I am no longer "tractorless", so this will be just the beginning. I really like the compact / sub-compact size tractors and have narrowed my search to these three.

I think I know the answer to my question but we are spending a bunch of money and I want to try and make the best decision that I can.

With all three new 2009 machines equipped with a front end loader only (for price comparison ease) the GC2400 is the least expensive, the GC2600 is $600 more and the 1523 is $800 more than the GC2600 or $1400 more than the GC2400.

Based on what I have read on other threads here, I really think the GC2400 will be enough machine for me, but the 1523 is priced very well and has some advantages, the most obvious being the longer frame size and larger tires. Looks to me like longer and taller could translate in to more work easier, yet it still is a very maneuverable size for me.

I am leaning toward the 1523, but of course $1400 will buy a lot of beer.

What does everyone think?

I really appreciate everyone's input!!

Can't wait. Thanks, Frank

Welcome aboard Frank!!

We have a 1523, and love it. Ours is the hydro model. The gear version has a single stage clutch, so if you step on the clutch while using a PTO implement, the PTO stops. This is why we got the hydro.

MF does not offer a BH, or front mount snowblower for it. WE had also looked at the GC series, but wanted the larger frame size. The new 1500 series all have side by side hydro pedals, not really an issue for us, not worth trading up for.

Anything else, feel free to ask.

I went from a Yanmar FX24D Compact to the GC2400. I actually love the smaller tractor. Regardless of your decision get the Hydro.

Do they still have the zero interest for 60 months option? That was the determinant for me.

Well I don't know if the search option was not available to me before I registered or if I finally found it after I did, but! I have been able to find a good bit of info somewhat comparing the GC2400/2600 models to the 1523. I am still a bit undecided though. The real question for me still seems to be: Is the performance increase of the 1523 over the GC2400 worth $1400? It probably is considering the increased ground clearance and larger tires alone, and the larger cockpit and spring seat could be considered a bonus as well. The rider/operator position and control location is spread out a bit on the 1523, also good for me.

blackd: The 0% form MF is still an option, which is nice, but the price is less if you pay cash or do a bank finance. You get a rebate for not financing. How it works out depends on how much up front money is available. (Isn't that usually the case!).

WilliamBos: Thanks for the photos! The MF brochures and website are severely lacking in good pictures and information in general. I think if your tractor knowledge is developed, info may be ok, but for me the data as provided is lacking. As I said earlier, the dealers have been good about my endless questions. More coming too.

Thanks, Frank

If you get any one of these 3 GC2400/2600 or 1523 and later want to get a BH it's going to get real expensive so
I'd shoot for a GC2410 rite off the bat.

Hey all,

I guess I am a little surprised by the lack of response here. I had hoped some more of the experience of the readers / posters could help me with a decision. Maybe it is my lack of personality in my posts or my major newbe status.

(but anyway!)

Thanks to WiliamBos, blackd, and Lbrown59 for their input, as well as the thinkers that didn't post.

Rubber side down.

Thanks, Frank

Edited for reality: On second, third, or fourth thought, it has only been about a day and a half since my original post. For me it seems like an eternity. Please forgive me for my enthusiasm. It appears that I am way too excited about this. Big boys and their toys?

In the sales brochure there is a pic of a 1523 with a BH and there is one listed for it as well.

You really can't go wrong with any of them. However as a really satisfied owner of a GC2310TLB , that has to be my preference. Physical size makes a difference in the woods. Paths don't have to be as big. Sometimes it would be nice to have a little more power, but the advantages of size outweigh all else. BH is really handy and definitely better to buy as part of the original package. Frame mount etc. Keep asking questions and the answers will come.

I agree that you can't go wrong with any of them. I bought a new GC2410TLB on December 31st and I am also very satisfied with the little tractor. The power at low RPM is great. I believe all 3 tractors have the same engine so that is not a factor, the 2600 just spins the engine faster to get more power. I think there is only .9 hp more at PTO speed. The ground clearance of the 1523 would be nice if you are going to get into rough areas. The GC series does not have a lot of ground clearance but it is still big enough for a 3 point bush hog. I would go with the biggest tractor that I could use, if you have storage big enough for the 1523 I would with it. In fact I did not think the 2610 was worth the extra money over the 2410 because they were the same tractor just a different tachometer and a turned up injection pump.

If I had the room for a bigger tractor I would get one with a cab, air conditioning would be great for me! But I only have 1/2 acre and the GC2410 is over kill on my lot. But I sure have fun with my toy. Gopher wars start again on Saturday! I have only trapped one since I started chasing them with the backhoe but I have them on the run.

new2MFfrank-- It's summer! I've found that a lot of "us" frequent posters must be busy, as I am....

I have a 2310- love the little bugger and it's saving me gobs of time & sweat in both snow-blowing and lawnmowing. The BH.... if you get a thumb for it, it's amazing what you can grab, pick up, move, drag, hold, etc. I'm just beginning to get into the woods with mine --very gingerly-- but it's done fine so far. I'm seriously considering some skid plates to protect its underbelly. I think if I had those, it would do quite well in the woods.

The 2410 has a much better set-up on the dashboard, including a temp gauge (which I added), and lights. Sorta wish I had one of those, if for that reason alone.

The 1500 series is also nicely compact, but I'd certainly opt for the TLB version; the BH's an expensive option, but very powerful, even on the 23/24 series. Even if you only use it occasionally, it's still worth the investment, IMO. Also makes for a convenient rear ballast when using the loader!

Check out Paystar's post for some other discussion of M-F SCUTs.

All three are very capable tractors. However, if you own lots of land:
Rule 1 is almost always buy the biggest tractor you can afford. There are few people who complain their tractor is too big.

Subcompacts are meant to fill the niche between garden tractors, and mid to full size tractors. They are perfect for property management tasks and will do almost anything you ask them to do, just on a smaller scale. I am very satisfied with mine.

Keep in mind though, these are glorified lawn mowers. Consider whether their size is going to fit with your future expectations. If you might have aspirations to do lots of work around there, and you budget allows for it, you might consider a larger tractor.

I agree. I chose the GC2600 because the smaller size makes it easier to get in between the trees. that said, I don't think you could go wrong with any of them, I'm very happy with mine I just don't know how I got by without a tractor for as long as I did.

Absolutely great information!!

At this point the back hoe is out of my price range, but listening to everyone's comments makes me want to wait and save. Problem there is I Just Can't Take It Anymore. I really Need to buy now.

One of the sales guys I talked to made an interesting statement. He said "figure out what size tractor will do the job you need and then buy the next bigger one." Of course that could be just salesman talk, but the tractor dealers I have talked with seem to be more of an "enthusiast" type rather than just an out to make a buck salesperson. Very good group.

I too want to be able to sneak in and around the trees, so last night I measured the outside of the rear tires of a GC2410 and a 1523 and they are within an inch. It actually seems like the GC is just a bit wider at the ground. The published literature shows the GC actually 3 1/2" wider, but by my tape measure it's only about 1" with the bar tires. The wheelbase of the 1523 is listed as about 2 1/2" more, but with the bigger tire diameter that adds to the length too. Still a pretty small, maneuverable footprint I'll bet.

Keep it coming!! :D

Thanks, Frank

We have turfs on our 1523, and it still maneuvers quite nicely. Anything specific on it, if I can help you, I will.

All,

I have had a special day today. I purchased a Massey Ferguson 1523 manual transmission tractor with a front-end loader and a 48" rotary cutter made by International World Agritech.

I don't know where to begin so:

I met Rodger Harrod, the owner of Georgia Deer Farm & Agri-Center, this morning at 9:30 at his business outside Carrollton, Georgia to finalize the purchase. He and his staff have been very helpful assisting me, answering my endless questions, and being very understanding of my major newbe status. I am fortunate, in that I was able to "shop all the brands" that I was interested in close to home. I said this before but, I looked at Kubota, John Deere, and Massey Ferguson before deciding, and ALL the dealers were very, very, very helpful. I can't say enough about customer service. I feel that many products today do not have the customer support that I have witnessed so for in my new interest. Certainly I may have missed features that are important to some people, but I took the knowledge I gained, weighed the plusses and minuses, then ignored all that and then just bought the really cool red one. (Wait a minute did I really say that?)

I fired her up this morning at about 11:00 and at first I felt pretty intimidated. After some time in the saddle I looked at the hour meter and it was at 2 hours. I meant to look earlier but my enthusiasm must have gotten the best of me so I don't know the actual start time today but some of the ticks on the clock I logged myself, searching for "the answer" in the Deer Farm parking lot. When I headed in for a shower, the meter said 8.2 (say what?). Unbelievable! My wife Tina said she thought maybe she was going to have to come out and drag me off the thing?

So if I can include photos you should see them below!!!!!

Congrats....I've been really happy with my GC2410 I purchased last October, and I'm sure you'll love the big brother version. It really is amazing what you can do with these little machines.
