One thing that I've noticed about the backhoe on my tractor is how much slack is in the arm around the pins. It looks like there should be a shim or something in there. Have any of you noticed this on your 2310?

I think that I'm going to try to find some brass washers to fit in there to tighten it up some.

Below are some pics of the pins that I'm referring to.

Look just to the left of the grease fitting:

That is normal. It's the slop around the circumference of the pin that a person needs to worry about.

I thought that it was probably made that way but I wanted to make sure that something didn't get left out during assembly.

I still don't like it though. When you swing the bucket, it just allows it to bounce back and forth too much.

I have a friend who is a heavy equipment mechanic (for 20+ years) and he said that some backhoes do have brass shims/washers in there.

My skidloader has replacable brass "inserts" around the circumference of the pins in the lift arms so that the brass wears out instead of the steel arms.

Only bush the boom pins, not the hydraulic piston pins. The hydraulic pins need slop to follow any wear in the boom play, otherwise you could in the future put too much stress on the cylinders causing extra wear and tear.

I gotchya. That makes sense. Thanks.

It's really just the upper boom pin that really bothers me anyway. It's also the one with the most slack. When I swing quickly, I can actually see it slide/bounce back and forth within the boom arm.

Your pins look very dry! You will hear more side to side slop if there not greased more offten. I like to see a BH greased every 3 Hours. Just give them 1 or 2 shots of grease.
I would not shim. You maybe doing more bad then good. The cylinders need to float on the pins to keep from binding.

Yea, I do need to grease them again. I ran out of grease the last time and can't seem to remember to pick up some more grease when I'm out again. Arrghh, I hate middle age. :( :D

They have more grease than the factory and/or my dealer put on them which was NONE! Kept breaking the pinch bolt the first time I used the backhoe only to find out that the dealer and/or MF never greased the pin because of a painted over grease fitting.

MF never greased the pin because of a painted over grease fitting.[/QUOTE]

I have told M/F to put rubbor nipples over the grease fitting before they paint the loaders and backhoes---I guess it must cost an extra .70 to .80 cent per unit they don't want to loose, but I can spend 10 mins scrapping paint of the fitting before the tractors go out.

The first time I greased my BH the bottom grease fitting on the boom would not take grease. When I removed the fitting the hole was never drilled though so it was never greased .

Massey Dealer: At least you scrape and clear the fittings (assumably), the biggest complaint I have found, {on new units}, is the fact that units, (GC2310) are commonly delivered with fittings that are not greased (mine had 3). Some are not greased because the have paint on them, and some are overlooked all together.
Note: I have seen a tool for cleaning/clearing grease fittings I bet it would work better than a razor blade. Massey should supply you, {Dealers}, with the tool and a FOOLPROOF diagram that the tech could check off to make sure none are missed. If there is a diagram then its not working for most Dealers.
Note to fellow owners: Try synthetic grease, yeah it costs a little more, but, it stays in there much better and lubricates better in extreme temperatures. That way if you get lazy or forget to grease your better protected.

My dealer walked me through the whole greasing process before I left the parking lot. Very helpful and it gave me a mental checklist to perform when I grease
