Hey Gary, I saw you worked at Syncrude in quality control. Was that for Bechtel? The last big project my welding teacher in High school worked on before becoming a teacher was Syncrude. He might have been a foreman as well? I know he was a foreman on a lot of big projects. He told me once they often put him in charge of problem apprentices. I asked what's a problem apprentice... "A guy who will throw a grinder at someone while it's still running!" He had tickets for every common metal and did mostly critical TIG welding. He said aluminum is easy but Monel is tricky because it is the consistency of butter.
His first year teaching (1978) he went to Montana on summer break to do a TIG job. He said only 2 local welders passed the job test. He was making $2000/week which was huge money back then. Did you a know guy with the last name Svarich? Even after I finished High school, I'd go visit him and he'd let me build projects at the school. He's raising expensive show horses now but I haven't talked to him in a long time. He was one of those people that really made a difference in my life.
