Most 3 phase motors can be wired for 480 or 240. Re-wire it for the lower voltage and all you need is a phase converter.

I didn't know that, maybe it's similar to my 40 year old Miller Dial-arc welder that I bought 5 years ago. That to can be hooked into 3 phase 480 or 4 something but I changed power clips inside so now I have it on 240 volt input cable, 80 amp breaker.

Gee that takes 3 phase, 440 volts? So you have 240 volts in the shop, (and appears to be a crowed shop) then you run a 240 wire wire to a motor that some how returns it to the mill at 440 volts, how far of the wagon am I........

Great pictures thanks for the update, so do you have any first projects on the list? I suppose the where this Bridgeport shines is making gears and splines.....

I don't have 440 volt power, only 240 single phase. Single phase power has two legs at 240 volt. Those legs are fed into the phase converter to generate a third leg at 240 volt. The two original legs plus the third generated leg makes 3 phase power. Before you ask, I don't know why they call it single phase when it has two legs at full voltage.

Yes, my shop is crowded, trailers, atv, SXS, pickup and such are inside to keep them out of the winter weather. I need to build more out buildings.

No specific projects are lined up yet. Mainly cause it's too cold to spend much time in the shop. Low this week was -26F, highs were mid teens so I am catching up on my TV time.

Single phase on 2 lines with voltage never made any sense to me, makes bout has much sense as white wire being ground and black wire is hot, how many people have white ground in July, I have black ground all year long, black or green should be ground, white or red should be hot, someday when I have time I'll straighten out all the electrical engineer's terminology.

I have heat in my shop but when it's rainy or dark I still dont care to be out there. It's one of big problems of owning something, I dont like leaving stuff out side to weather and rodents, it can be costly. So if you build a building your going to need CK shingle ckshingle.com

Actually the white wire isn稚 ground, it痴 neutral. Green and bare wires are ground. At least that is what I was told.

But if one looks in their breaker panel, white wire is going to ground. An electrician is going have a nightmare in my house, 40= years ago I started wiring some outlets and put white wire for hot, black for ground, now I have black for hot and white for ground just to go with the flow, that means my 40 year old outlets I can put in neutral when not being used...

I wonder if white coats are made big enough to fit over insulated coveralls which are over a medium weight coat?

Company started in 1937, first machines done in 1939. I paided attention to the movie.

That is how neutral gets bonded to your ground rod outside the house

Oldpath05 your color coding would be correct for Australia and New Zealand
3phase info on wikipedia Three-phase electric power - Wikipedia
The word bonded is a new electrical term for me but in redneck terms, white becomes ground when white is hooked into ground......

I wonder if my forefathers came from Australia or New Zealand, I do have a desire to visit N.Z......
