I spent a few hours bush hogging in briars and small trees, 10' and smaller. When I got done I saw that my dipstick is gone. No chance of going back over the ground I covered today, finding a needle in a haystack would be much easier. Even if I did find it, it's almost certainly been through the bush hog and isn't usable.

Best case scenario, does anybody have a dipstick for a Yanmar FX28D (or 26D, IIRC they're the same engine), or 2wd versions of those?

Second best, if anybody has one of those models, can you give me the measurements of your engine oil dipstick, measured from the sealing lip of the rubber plug to the "full" mark, and from the "full" mark to the "add" mark?

This is a straight rod type dipstick, it would be simple to make one from a length of stainless welding rod. All I need are the measurements.

Thanks in advance.

Jhunt, you are really setting yourself up for it dude, did you mean enemies, or enamas? And all you wanted was a simple dipstick measurement. Better duck! The Dragon must have bit ya...lol....nice campground ya got going there. New member here too.

I lost the one on the rear of my JD2555 for hydraulics and asked the same question for a owner's measurement. That was after I bought the only dipstick I could find, which was a replacement from jd. It came in and in the instuctions said to mark it using the old one as a guide. Duhhhh, if i had that one, I wouldn't have purchased a replacement. About 3 months later, I was walking across the back woods and found it. (It has a red knob on top)
Good luck with yours,
David from jax

Perhaps you would have better luck if you PMed one of our members who owns a FX28D and asked them directly. You can use the search feature to find threads by them. One new member who comes to mind goes under the name FX28D.

There is a member of the Yahoo Yanmar group in Corvallis, Oregon who has an identical tractor and he's going to send me the measurements.

If he doesn't, I'm going to take the safe route. I'll get a new filter and change the oil, adding what I know to be the correct amount. After running the engine for a few minutes, then shutting it off and letting everything settle to the pan, I'll put the new dipstick in, and wherever the level comes to, that's the new "full" mark.

I've found a way to convert the dipstick from a pull-out to a screw type so it'll be harder to lose the next time. When I get finished I'll post a picture of the modification.

Thirty years ago I was building air cooled VW engines for a living. Twenty-five years ago I started building engines for a Ford dealership. I know a little about wrenching.

And for 6011Artist, yes, I know the difference between enemies and enemas. I'm too old to get bent out of shape by stuff like that. I'm just having a little fun.

Thanks for the comments on our campground. We're kinda proud of it. ;)

When we lost one of the super rare 2pt pins from our tiller, I was going to try renting a metal detector from our local rental shop. It was actually pretty cheap, like $20 for 4 hours. Never got to try the metal detector because we found the pin the next day.

I've already made the dipstick, I just have to fit the new screw-in mechanism (looks very much like a 1/2" compression fitting) to the tube, probably on Friday.

I have some experience looking for stuff with a metal detector. I have very little experience in actually finding what I was looking for.

I lost two class rings in 1975 and I'm still looking for both of them and I know within 100' of where I lost both of them. :(
