Having been an officer for almost 23 years, I can speak of the whys of citatons... 1. law was broken. 2. attitude of driver. 3. attitude of the P.D. and/or supervisors. 4. revenue. Most of our officers would not write citations for lights... usually warnings. If, however, the driver's attitude is bad (why did you stop me? It's only a light! This is stupid, etc.), it is uaually a guaranteed citation. Although there are no quotas, if police don't write citations, supervisors wonder what you do for 8-10 hours a day. Sounds like your case ended like most of those violations do. I usually tell folks to handle their citations just like that. Was your attitude a factor in getting a citation rather than a warning? Remember, just be polite. Officers have a job to do & that's what they are doing... they usually don't care what happens to citations after they write them. With all due respect, sometimes it's the officers with attitudes. Got pulled for speeding (thought it was a 65 zone and, frankly, I was late!) and the lady was obviously angry and questioned whether I was trying to run (it took no more than a minute to pull over). I was looking for a safe spot, was in the right lane and had slowed down so what's the big deal. I thought a driver had a right to find a safe spot to pull over. The sholder was very narrow and then we came to an on ramp, which I wanted to get by. I was civil with the officer but I can't say she was with me. She looked at my daughter in the passenger seat and said "who's that?." "Does she have any i.d?" Come on--don't mind the questions but respect is a two-way street.
