Fun Carmaker Trivia

Never really paid much attention to Studebakers growing up other than thinking they were odd-looking cars. Wasn't until the mid 70s when I worked with a guy who had quite a collection of them in various stages of roadworthiness. Many were just parts cars, but he rotated thru several as daily drivers. They were quite advanced for their time. I'm sure the styling was somewhat off-putting, as well as some quirks like the window cranks worked the "wrong" way.

They made good wagons! Then Along came the Golden Commando!

Opps; should have been Golden Hawk.

I've got three Studebakers. A 1947 truck, a 1956 Sky Hawk and a 56 Golden Hawk. Amazing vehicles for their time period. (y)

Sooo, South Bend, IN is the home of Studebaker. There's a great Studebaker national museum here in town with quite the collection. Cars. Trucks. Weasel.

My wife's mother's father worked at Studebaker. Growing up, she lived a few houses down from one of the factor gates. She has fond memories of the weasel driving down the street in front of her house. She's not sure why, but it was a frequent occurrence. She said it had a whistle. Not a horn, but a whistle. They'd whistle at the kids as it drove by.

My father who owned several Studebakers both cars and trucks often said, "They ruined Studebaker when they took the tongue out of them."

The guys at the coal mine where he worked often heard from my dad how he wanted to fly. So they drilled 2 holes into the bullet nose of his brand new Studebaker car and added a propeller to his car. Needless to say this joke did not go over well.

My paternal grandfather worked at Studebaker in the early '50s as a door fitter.
He had a Studebaker pickup that I got to ride in sometimes when we went to visit him.
He had a horse that would never come to the barn when grandad wanted him to, so he would go out and chase the horse around the pasture until he got tired and stopped. Then grandad could put the halter on him, tie it to the bumper and lead him back to the barn.
My uncle Dick had several Studebaker cars over the years, but I was pretty young then and don't remember what models, but they all had the "bullet" front end on them. I did think they were cool though.
