Unless the tank is structurally weak in that area most of the time tanks rust from the water in them from the fuel. You might want to put some fuel in a mason jar and let it sit for a while to see if you got water in the diesel to prevent this you need water filters on your fuel supply and keep the tanks full all the time. the tank seal can be gotten from motorcycle shops its a common problem for them.
