I retired from a well paying job with full benefits and a nice retirement at 56 so I don't have any desire to 'create' another full time job for myself. Between running hay and doing heavy fabrication and field welding, I have plenty enough to occupy my time and still have time to go out west hunting regularly.

For me, running hay will stay a hobby. How I like it. No pressure at all. Nice to only have one customer too, one that pays on time, a big plus.
I am full time, mostly farm, some property maintenance and some construction. A typical year would be:
January February March April-deliver hay, construction, snowplowing, land clearing & hay field reclamation.
May June July August September- 350 acres of hay farming/baling and conservancy land mowing.
October November December- deliver hay, fertilize fields, conservancy land mowing.
Of course theres always equipment maintenance ongoing.

With me, it grows closer to 100% farm as the years go by. I really enjoy it. I would like to hang up the tool belt for good after 35 years of it.
However, my profit margins have risen while growing. I haven’t observed the ”profit margins staying the same with growth” that you have. I have found that responsible growth created a lot more profit.

Prices/Inflation should not be a given... Paid 2k for my Apple//e computer and 10 years before over $100 for a ti calculator that now can replaced at the dollar store for a dollar...

Parents paid inflation adjusted $1600 for their 35mm camera in 1959...

Just saying lower oil/fuel prices was a tax cut for everyone...

I disagree with that but I'm refraining from injecting any politics in this thread.

Demand is way down (due to Covid) and supply is decreasing due to an EO and I'll leave it at that. You fill in the blanks, you are an intelligent person.

Bottom line is, when it costs you a C note to fill your Pickup or SUV up, all you have to do is look back at the source.

Basically irrelevant. Numerous refineries throughout the country (and there as well). Don't blame the increased cost on that. Merely a blip in the total picture. Heck, we have 3 large refineries here, within 75 miles of me. 2 south of Detroit and 1 in north Toledo. All connected via pipelines that deliver uncracked crude and other products, 24/7.
