Fuel knock issue

I need some help on Tafe 35di tractor. How do you set the fuel pump. I’m confused on how to go about it. I’ve worked on all kinds of gasoline engines but only serviced Diesel engines. Engine is knocking and mechanic friend said it was a fuel related issue. Any help would be appreciated.
