i was out tilling with my ford 1710 and the engine kept on losing power...the RPM would fall and then i'd stop and they'd pick back up again. so i noticed that the fuel filter bowl wasn't full of fuel. i then shut 'er down and removed the filter. but now i cant get it back on.....there's 4 parts...the filer element....the bowl...and O ring....and the screw on band. i guess the part that is messing me up is the O ring. i would think it goes between bowl and the filter housing...not the screw on band and the bowl? well either way I can't get it back on. the screw on band will go on without the bowl so the threads should be fine.
the worst part is that what needs to be planted ain't.

AFAIK.. you have it correct.. oring over element. My guess is that it is getting cocked to the side and not allowing you to screw it down correctly.

Did you find out what yor fuel flow problem was? Plugged petcock?

yeah...well i was hoping it was the filter but i realize now that that wouldn't keep the bowl from filing up it would just keep the fuel from leaving the bowl. so i'm working my way back upstream and it will either be a clogged valve (is that a petcock?) under the tank or a clog at the bottom of the tank. either way i will have to drain the tank somehow before working on it. i'm not real happy right now but i reckon it could be worser...and maybe it will get so.
but for now i'm gonna eat lunch and feel sorry for myself.

Often times, walking away from a situation and taking a break, then coming back with a renewed outlook can make all the difference in the world.

That "valve" is a petcock. 9 times in 10, there'll be a brass screen on the top of the petcock. That may require draining the fuel tank to remove and clean, but a clogged screen PROBABLY means the fuel tank needs cleaning too anyway.

By the way, what's for lunch?

ham sandwich....oreos....glass of juice.
i found the petcock blockage (i think petcock is a weird word with many meanings) and fixed that. there was this weird little rubbery white thing in the hole. but i still can't get the filter assembly back on. I'm going to take the filter bracket off the tractor and see if a different angle makes it easier. at least then i can take it to the dealer and let them mount the filter if i fail.
the other problem is that i'll have to bleed it to start it now and with a semi-dead battery that may not work out. so i may end up getting a battery very soon. which i really need anyway.

While you are doing all the fiddling with the filter.. attach jumper cables to your truck or auto and just let it set there and run and charge the battery up while you work.

Petcock as defined by webster is a small cock, faucet or valve.

Randy,

Fuel filter looks SOMETHING like the one attached, but has a wire bale that goes over the glass filter canister, with a nut on the bottom, right? All I can think is: Make sure the nut is screwed all the way down. And, yes, the rubber O-ring gasket goes between the glass housing & the filter body.

yes dart...looks like that but smaller. haven't been able to get back to it today but looking forward to it tomorrow morning. but there is no wire bail or nut. the filter itself just slides onto the fuel feed tube that goes to the pump. then the plastic (not glass) see through bowl, the oring and the screw band. I've removed it before and replaced it although its been a while since.

Aren't the filter and injector pump below the level of the tank? If so, you just gravity bleed it.

filter yes. pump...i don't know. my past experience with this has been that i have to loosen the fuel lines between the pump and the injectors and let the air out while cranking.

ok...this has concluded i think. i got a new battery and got the tractor going good but now i smell like diesel fuel because when i was bleeding the air out it spit all over me.

That's an unnecessary step. If the pump is primed, (properly bled), it will pump fuel and force any air out through the cylinders before it starts.

well Norm...the next time this comes up you are welcome to come by and give your method a try. the beer's on me.
o...btw...the seat fell off when i was tilling today. LOL

Machinery has a way of getting even!

I learned something new here. You may not have to bleed all the injectors one at a time till they have no air left like I was taught. Well, at lest if the tank is on top like on my 'bota.

Cool!
