John Deere 5520
I have had repeated problems starting my John Deere 5520. Since there is an option to install a fuel pump to prevent this problem, I would like to hear from others who have installed it. Has it made a difference in how the tractor starts? Is it a positive accessory for the tractor? Are you glad you did it?

installing a pump will help sometimes.i would recommend it.my neighbor and i have both installed a pump on our tractors.it helps when the fuel is below half a tank.

Install the pump if it is a cab tractor or an open station tractor. If it is a straddle mount tractor it doesn't need it due to gravity feed tank between roll bar. I have installed many of these electric pumps and the owners have said the tractor has never run better. They not only realized better starting, but a difference in fuel starvation under load that they didn't realize was occuring.

I have also installed a few of these pumps. It makes a world of difference. It also makes the system self bleeding when changing the filter. Just install new filter, turn key on for 60 seconds and starts right up. No fighting with the primer pump and bleed screw.

Mine started to lose power when pulling an offset disc yesterday and the fuel getting low. What pump is recommended and where do you install it?

The parts that Deere recommends is as follows:
(1) - R269133 - Fuel Pump Mounting Plate
(1) - AL169412 - Clamp
(1) - 19M7867 - Screw
(1) - 14M7298 - Flange Nut
(1) - AL168483 - Fuel Pump
(1) - AL154046 - Fitting
(1) - RE218699 - Fitting
(1) - 14M7139 - Nut
(1) - R270247 - Nut
(1) - RE270815 - Wiring Harness
(1) - RE271703 - Wiring Harness
(1) - 61M5015 - Elbow Fitting (consists of 38H5015 elbow and T77814 o-ring)
(1) - R268896 - Barbed Fitting (this will be added to the end of 61M5015)
(1) - 38H5078 - Nut
(1) - N154080 - Tee Fitting
(4) - RE187161 - Clamp

These parts add a second outlet line to the fuel filter to make it truly self bleeding. The second outlet is connected with a tee in the fuel return line. The pump gets installed under the cab on the right side of the transmission housing. All these parts can be pricey. I have installed AH130127 pump which is less than half the price and then fabricated wiring and mounting bracket that makes the cost more affordable and works just as well.

Do you ever price any parts from JD parts using A&I part numbers?
A-AL168483 Pump ADD 137.88 USD

AL168483 Fuel Pump ADD 205.97 USD
AH130127 Pump ADD 89.61 USD

TxJim, to be honest, I don't think to check often enough. The prices are much better and the inventory of A&I parts is getting larger all the time. It is a good alternative.

i would suggest replacing your supply line from the tank to the filter. i have replaced just about every single piece of rubber line on mine and starting is no longer an issue or rough running. i cant beleive that these tractors have the problems they do, something like fuel lines??? wtf. the only piece that i havnt replaced is the piece that connects the fuel filler neck/housing to main tank. this piece of rotten junk line still leaks when i re-fuel the tractor and it pisses me off greatly. but seriously, replace the supply line and see if that helps.

Maybe a stupid question, but what is A&I?

It's a parts company that JD bought part ownership of that sells parts for farm equip by independent dealers plus JD dealers. Here's an example of a JD part I looked up earlier on another forum. The lower PN is for A&I. Some parts from A&I are dramatically lower than JD prices. I've had an AC evaporator in my JD 4255 for several years with no problems. Most of the time on can just add A- preceding part number on JDparts.com to get a price for A&I part for JD

Update on fuel issues with my 5520. I had severe loss of power when I started cutting hay this spring. Any time the tractor had a good load on it, it would start to sputter and lose power. Changed both fuel filters, no improvement. I wound up replacing the primer pump on top on the engine mounted fuel filter and so far that has fixed the problem. I am pretty sure the bottom O ring on the assembly was bad and just replacing that would have fixed the problem a lot cheaper.
