The guy repeats proper flag protocol for tattered flags, and donated the flag to the American Red Cross. They're the ones auctioning it off for hurricane relief. I see nothing wrong with it.

Never knew donating a tattered flag to the American Red cross for an auction was an approved means to dispose of the Flag. Could you link a source for my reading enjoyment?

First off, he's not disposing that flag, so that's that.

Here ya go.

Four options for retiring worn-out American flags

You can burn it, recycle it, donate it, cut it up into pieces (as long as you don't cut through the blue field, as once you cut it, it's no longer a U.S. flag) and dispose of the pieces respectfully ( that means wrap it up carefully and put it out with the trash, as long as it's done in a dignified and respectable manner). Many of the flags made today of synthetic material are not safe to burn, as they give off toxic fumes. So you can't burn them.

No where, anywhere, does anything say you can't keep it if it's tattered. They just say don't fly it if it's not suitable for display, and dispose of it properly when the time comes.

Here's a link to the 2nd flag flown at Iwo Jima. It's tattered, and displayed. It's not being flown, but it is being displayed. Maybe we should write to the National Museum of the Marine Corp and tell them they shouldn't be displaying it?

Your four options did not list donating it to acution it off (he's not disposing of the flag, but he should as it should no longer be flown). As mentioned, I'm only pointing out the sheer stupidity on how people get worked up over people kneeling during the national anthem vs how we as a socitey actually treat the Flag. Personally, I don't care what he does with it as I can't control what he does.

And that's where we'll just have to disagree on this subject. There's plenty of examples of tattered flags being displayed in museums. And people keep sentimental flags. I have the first one I was given when we got married and bought our first house. It got worn, faded, and started to tear, so I replaced it with a new one, and kept the old one for sentimental reasons. It's folded neatly and tucked away in a safe place. ;)

I don't think we disagree, I'm just being a PITA playing devils advocate.
