Don't know about Mac, but as for linux the answer is unquestionably yes. As for hacking? Internet servers are the biggest targets. And if memory serves me, more of those are running linux/unix than M$.
Go d/l Mepis linux and boot from it. It will run entirely off the cd. You may be surprized. Although you have a performance hit when running from a cd, it is quite funtional and you can install it to the hard drive if you wish.
