If there is no where for the fluid to go then yes it could not collapse. However, if you have a lift cylinder that has bad seals, you can disconnect and cap the pressure side and the load will still fall. As the fluid bypasses the seal it forces fluid back through the valve. This does not prove the valve is out of spec, but proves the seals are bad.

By fixing the cylinder the fluid only has one path back to tank which most of the time is back in spec of the valves performance.

Let's say the valve manufacturer claims a 12 CC per minute leakage rate. If the piston seal is bad, then the rate would be 24 cc per minute. Doesn't take long at that rate for the load to be on the ground.

Is that a fair assumption?

Sorry, it is not. :)

I guess my next question would have to be why did we always have success rebuilding the cylinder to correct the issue? And why is Rick able to make his customers happy by rebuilding or replacing the cylinder?

Nothing to be sorry for, we are just having a discussion.

The loader can drop faster with leaky cylinder seals but it’s NOT the root cause of the problem.

/ front bucket dropping overnight #25
But why does it drop faster?

/ front bucket dropping overnight #26
Higher pressure in the cylinder and leaking in both sides of the valve.

That is what I have been saying. Because it leaks on both sides of the valve, the valve can still be in manufacturing specs but the load is falling faster than it would with good seals.

It's your tractor telling you to put the bucket on the ground when you aren't using it!

if I leave my loader up two feet off the ground, the next day it will still be at the same spot. I guess there not all the same.

It's rare to have hydraulics that don't drift. Consider yourself in that minority. :)

I missed an exciting thread.;)

I just wish RickB would hang around and be open to learning....it takes awhile for some people to grasp such concepts, rather than being close minded, stating his piece, and not coming back.

I have kept up with every response to this thread. Learning is accomplished by reading and listening, not by talking and posting. You have the option of putting me on your ignore list if you are offended by my participation.

I thought this was a good discussion and did not think Rick was out of line at all. All he did was share his experiences. I certainly was not offended by any comments.

I didn't think he was out of line at all. I wasnt offended or anything. That was not the intent of my post

There have been MANY of these threads that debate this...weather a cylinder can compress. Some people take a more explaining.

I know this has been explained a hundred different way.....and when I say I wish people would be more open to learning....part of that is asking questions so I can try to understand what inst being conveyed clearly. Rather than just make a post....disagreeing.....and then several people try to explain...hoping that something is being learned....

Then next time one of these threads come up....its rinse and repeat. And we hash it out all over again....with the same people.

I’ve been ‘hanging around’ here for 18 years. What qualifies you to comment on what I have learned? If I agree with you does that mean I have learned something?

/ front bucket dropping overnight #38
If you agree with something that is true and factual that you previously disagreed with, then yes I'd say something was learned.

If I fill a glass completely full of water, then stick my finger in it, does it overflow?

Same thing applies to a compressing cylinder. Fluid has to go somewhere. Either an external leak such as with plumbing or thru the control valve.

True enough. However, that does not indicate that the control valve has failed or is out of spec. It also doesn't mean that someone experiencing cylinder drift will correct their problem with a new valve. A new valve could actually make the drift worse.
