Front Bearings Bad?

My right front tire has play in it. If I push and pull (together) either the sides (front/back) or (top and bottom) of tire, I have in and out play along the axis of the axial. The previous owner tightened the crap out of the castle nut trying to get the play out. The bearings themselves don't look to have play in them. There is plenty of thread left, so the castle nut is not bottoming out.

There is little to no play if I push the top of the tire and pull the bottom of the tire, i.e. play perpendicular to the axis of the axial.

The amount of play is noticeable, about 1/32 of an inch. I'm not sure it the problem is in the hub or the bearing.

The tractor is a YM2010 2 wheel drive.

It is like the bearings are not seated properly in the hub. Any ideas?

This is going to require troubleshooting.

That model uses regular ball bearings up there instead of tapered bearings like a trailer axle or car where you can adjust the preload. It is hard if not impossible to get all of the looseness out.

I'm thinking about swapping the front tires to see if the problem stays with the hub.

I'm thinking about what is happening. The castle nut is locking the outside bearing to the shaft leaving the inside bearing slightly short of the inside shaft recess.

When I push pull on the tire, the hub moves but the outside bearing doesn't.

Wondering if the bearing width for each bearing (inside / outside) is the correct width.

When I did mine it needed a 1mm thick race washer in there so I could adjust it up. Without it I couldn't get all the slack out of it.It did have one in there originally but they got flogged out when the OEM bearings collapsed.

I'll guess the bearings are correct. 6205 = .5512", 6206 = .6299"

My 2000 has been loose for 8yrs. that I know of. My guess was someone added or upgraded Hub and that was the reason for them being loose. Good to know that's not the case.

I need to buy some shims to see if I can reduce the play a bit. I can't find any local. Time to browse the Internet.

Anyone know what the shaft diameter is. Or the bearing dimensions. Inside and out.

I got it. 25mm and 30mm.

Just to followup, I added a .05mm shim to the inside bearing. The play has been reduced to a reasonable amount.
