Front Axle Rebuild

It seems that the front axle on my Yanmar YM2000 has a few hairline cracks in it, on each side and on both sides next to the wheels.

I am considering rebuilding the front end altogether while I replace the axle. Hoye Tractor has the axle for around $250.

- Does anyone have experience with rebuilding a front end? If so, what should i look out for? Bearings need pressed, etc.

- Is the axle from Hoye any good? Are there competing parts by other mfrs?

Based on Hoye tractor, here are some prices of items that should probably be replaced when replacing the axle.

The front axle assembly look a lot like my YM1700. Are you are talking about #6 in the diagram?. Have you considered having it welded? It looks like steel plate to me. I bet that you could weld some steel plate to it to reinforce it.

If it is not cast, and maybe even if it is, it sure seems to me that if it is not broken but only cracked, that welding it up would be the less expensive option. I know that I would certainly give it a go. But the question remains, Why is it cracked? Is it overloaded with a FEL? Was it dropped hard after a wheelie? What cracked it?

Since there is a "new style" which replaces this "old style" did they have lots of problems with this and that is why? For the $250 are you getting new or old?
