Yanmar FX24D replaced with Massey GC2400
Fri AM jumped on & NOTHING! Checked the wiring & found the alternator wires burned & the connector starting to melt. Anyone know if the regulator can go bad & cause this kind of problem, and is there an american alternative to the regulator? It's up on the firewall and I have to take the tractor apart to get to it.

The hard plastic connector on my charging circuit was old and brittle. Mine "fried" similar to what you are describing. I assumed that the connector had allowed something to short that had caused the problem. I rewired the circuit back to where I had good wire and replaced the connector with a two conductor trailer plug. Well, it still works, at least part of the time. Sometimes the charge light comes on for no apparent reason but usually only briefly. I also have to charge the battery from time to time. I wonder if my alternator might need brushes. Right now, it's working fairly well and I'm a little hesitant to tear into it. At least it isn't smoking anymore! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Mine also burned what looks like a fusible link from the starter solenoid. So, I think there may be more going on. I do seem to be getting some current from the alternator, but am fairly sure there is a short. The charging circuit is tied in to the starter circuit, and that seems to be why the fusible link blew.

Anyone replaced their regulator/rectifier.

I had a YM1820 do the same thing. I replaced the fusable link and it did it again. I then unplugged the current limiter and replaced the link. That stopped it. A new current limiter did the job. I think Hoye and Fredricks both sell aftermaket limiters to fit some models.

Thanks! It sounds like the answer.
