Found a coyote, I think

Like I said John it is very surprising how quickly they grow and learn, in the wild Sandy's mother would guide her by Sandy watching her, but Sandy would still learn by trial and error. At this point you are making sure she doesn't go hungry or get hurt or ill, so Sandy will learn to hunt and to survive. Yes the wild canines do use their paws much like a cat would, they get down on their bellies and crawl to a better striking distance where available, our wolves do that when they think they have a chance at a rabbit that has snuck into the yard. I haven't seen anything close to success, and don't encourage it, just to keep from having problems.
Sandy is learning that Kitty will only tolerate what she wants then shows sh that she is (higher on the totem pole), as I call it.

Just a quick update on Sandy.

She is living outside completely now, night and day, with no constraints. So she is settling into a routine with her sleeping and playing. She spends a lot of time in her den.

She is beginning to bring home rabbit parts and dead voles that she finds. Eating beetles and other bugs. No real hunting yet but we are working on that.

In the next few days I plan to give her vaccinations and worm medication.

John just a thought not sure how much room you have....... but you could take a rabbit (dead) and tie it to the back of your Tractor or ATV or bike, and put the other dogs in the house and you and Sandy go for it.

you want to ride fast enough not to catch it right away....... or allow Sandy to catch it easy the first couple of time and then make it harder and harder.
That will help her hunt ....... but I really think she will get to that all on her own.

Yeah. Start with a rabbit. Not a roadrunner. Everyone knows that the coyote never gets the road runner.

You'd have to get the rabbit first. Am I the only one who has the image in my head now of Raspy in a plaid flannel hat saying, "Be vewy vewy quiet..."?

You guys are great. I'm so glad you are following along and being a part of this marvelous journey.

It looks like Sandy will be with us for a few more months. I'm planning to release her in the wild once I'm convinced she is well prepared and I find the right spot. As long as she doesn't become dangerous to the other dogs or us, she is welcome here.

We are going to start catching bunnies and mice. I held out a live lizard this morning. She grabbed it and it was gone. We have been giving her bones from the butcher and she likes them. She buries them and then digs them back up later to munch on. And she has been finding rabbit parts and dead mice on her own to bring home.
