Valley,
I don't have a tractor yet but I've experienced a similar problem with a GM Saginaw 4 spd transmission. Shift rods and forks are accessed by the shift lever when you move it forward/backward, and across the H. Transmissions have a series of interlock balls, detents, and springs that prevent one from selecting TWO rods at the same time. If a ball or something is missing (as was the case in the GM transmission I rebuilt) it can allow two forks/shafts to be selected at the same time, followed by your movement of the shift lever forward or backward. If a forward gear and reverse are adjacent or side by side in the shift pattern, this situation can result in simultaneously selecting both forward and reverse at once. At that point the engine bogs done. I hope this helps you out.
