Anyone have some real world data on the mileage of the new 6.2L gas engine in the SD's?

I'm slowly working my way to a new truck, and probably going to pull the trigger when my current daily driver hits 200K. Which will be sometime next year.

So I'm building it in my head:
-3/4 ton
-4x4
-gas engine, automatic (no choice really)
-extended cab
-work truck package, with tow and plow packages.
-Ford or GMC
-red or black

I love the looks /features of both the Ford and GM, so the best deal and best mileage will decide. My father has a 2011 Chevy, and he is seeing 15 city, 19 hwy unloaded (reg. cab though). Dodge is not entirely out, but I like the style less than the Ford and GM's.

No numbers buy I have said it before and I will say it again, skip the 3/4 and get a 1 ton srw. You will gain 1500# or more capacity for little or no money. Also get the built in brake controller. Best $165 I have ever spent.

Chris.

I built two new GM HD's online, a 2500HD and a 3500HD, and could not believe the little difference in price between the two, both gassers.

Its not gas powered, but my 6.7 F250 4X4 2011 C/CAB 3.55 r/end ratio is averaging 18.6 on paper and digital dash lie-o-meter on hwy and city.
Not babying fuel pedal either. With 3 men and tools at any giving time, and yes putting in at least 3 gals of DEF(urea) every 10,000 miles.

I only have 1600 miles on my 2011 F250 6.2L 4X4 with 4.30 gears it was getting around 11.5 in heavy city traffic and around 15 MPG on the highway. I changed from 275-70-18 tires to 295-70-18 Nitto Terra Grapplers and the mile is around 10.5 in town now. I really like the truck.

Thats pretty good considering what it is. My old 99 350SD with 4.30's and the 275hp v10 only got 10.5 to 11mpg when I was easy on it on the highway.

Thanks guys.

Chris - If its the Ford, yes I'd probably get an F350, as its common to see them in EC/SB. As for the GMs, I don't think (not sure) that I can get that combo. I think the 3500 is only availible with a long bed, which is too long for me. Definately opting for the brake controller and upfitter switches (Ford).

Boone -I'd love to go diesel, but the extra cost and the looming possiblity of extreme repair bills have scared me off. Seems like they make unbelievable power, but I don't need that. Just plain jane reliability is what I'm looking for. The work truck gas HD trucks are a bit caveman like but built on proven technology and are reliable work horses.

Harley - Thats not bad with 4.30 gears. I'm probably going with 3.73/3.55if I can. I really don't need stump puller gears as I'm on the highway 90% of the time. I'm hoping for 14/18 mpg, which is currently better than my 1/2 ton now.

I looked at a 2012 GMC with all of this that stickered at $37K.

I would be shocked if it got an honest 18 mpg on the hwy. Of all the hand calc'ed mileage reports, the automatic 4wd gas SD's, v8 or v-10 get about 13-15 mpg. The manual 2wd's get up to 17-18 mpg. Its a big, not aerodynamic, heavy truck.

I've looking to jump into an ecoboost someday.

Yes the 4.30 gears sound low, but you have to figure in the new six speed auto trans that has two overdrives 5th gear is like .87 and 6th is .67. The engine only turns around 1850-1900 rpm at 65 miles per hour. It also comes with 33.4" tires (pretty big) And the truck is heavy, about 8000 lbs. If you are on the highway most of the time the 3.73's would be fine, most of the guy's that do any towing get the 4.30's.
