Hi, I have a ford 5' brush hog and i was brush hogging the other day, and run into a sapling, and the slip clutch must have been froze up and it sheared the input shaft off the gearbox. A new shaft is over $300, and i can't find a used mower or gearbox anywhere around my area everybody has gethered them up. So i was wanting to know if anybody on here had one that they would be willing to part with.

Thanks Ryan

Any chance for a picture of the gearbox in question, and maybe a bolt hole pattern and dimension?

Check with a tractor dealer.. many times a trade comes in with a beat up mower.. sometimes the tractor sells and the mower stays. my local NH dealer usually has 3-4 used mowers setting around.. ranging from beat up 5' 150$ mowers, to stuff near new in the 7-8' range.

I have a couple of beat up, rusted out mowers out back. I take them from time to time and put some sheet metal over the holes and sell them to people around here. A couple of them are blue, but no clue if they are Fords. I just do it for a hobby, so most people don't expect "new" mowers.
Plus, I don't paint, as you might can tell by my trencher/poorboys stumpgrinder and all the paint that got wasted on it.
As I mentioned, a picture and measurement would be nice.

I will take a picture and measurement and get them posted. It is an older square looking mower

By your description of the mower it sounds like one that BMB built for Ford back in the eighties. I don't know if BMB is still around, but if they are a box might be less expensive from them.

Pictures don't seem to be coming thru, but it may be on my end. Can you just email me them, and I will post them for you?

Anyone else see them?

Nope, I can't see them either...

I think they are supposed to look like this.

I will have to wonder out back and see if I have anything that looks like this.

Thanks sandman2234 for posting that pic for me. I removed the gearbox and it has a 24 spline output shaft and an 1 1/8 6 spline input shaft. The housing has 6 bolts bolting it to the deck. I can find and model info on it.

Work keeps getting in my way of making it out back to look at the ones I have. Hopefully I will get out there soon and give you an answer. Can you give us a size on the bolt pattern spacing, so we can tell about what size your gearbox is. Diagonal measurement across the center would be nice.
Since you have the gearbox off, any chance of getting a closer picture of it?

Can anyone confirm if those shaft sizes are "standard", or is this an unusual one. Sounds like the input shaft is (I think) but I don't know about the output. Most of my dealings with bushhogs is redecking them, or sharpening the blades.

I just went out and looked at the two blue rusted out bushhogs I have. Both use 4 bolt hole patterns, and one looks just like the "Bushhog" brand one I have. The other looks like the gearbox is on stilts, sitting about 6-8" above the deck. I looked at all of my old gearboxes, and all use a 4 bolt pattern. Didn't figure there was any need in looking at the output shaft since the boltholes don't match up. I took a few pictures, but since it was dark, they didn't come out very well.
I come across rusted out decks pretty often, and will keep an eye out for a six bolthole pattern one.

Good deal!!
Nothing worse than a broken mower, and nothing better than a good deal.

I have that exact Ford brush hog shown in the photo and I'm desperately seeking a new gearbox for it. Six bolts to the deck and 24 spline. All the parts dealers I've talk to act like I'm crazy when I tell them 24 spline. They say it's unheard of, and I'll likely have to modify to a square 4 bolt pattern to the deck and apply a new 12 spline hub to the blade bar. Any help on locating the correct gearbox for this implement would be appreciated.

A close friend of mine has a Ford cutter identical to the one in the photo for sale.

I have inspected it and can verify that it has a good gearbox. It needs a tail wheel and blades but is in good condition otherwise.

Email me and I will put you in touch with him.
