I have an old Ford 951 Special rotary cutter . The shear pin has broken off and the pieces are gone , the only thing i can figure out is it must be some kind of bolt with a blank shank with a lock washer and nut to hold it in place . The hole does not appear to be tapered as it would be if it were a traditional pin . If this is right , what hardness and size does the bolt have to be , or do i have to buy it from a parts dealer ?

I like to use gr2 bolts as shear pins.. sometimes even if the manual calls for a 5.. more protection.

in any event.. I have a 951 manual at home I'm thinking.. will take a look.

per my original 951 manual

48 and 60" 951 use a gr2 1/2" x 3-1/2" capscrew... 72" uses a special sized pin, obtain from dealer...

i'm guessing that just means shape.. i bet it is gr2 as well.

cnh calls that pin on a 72 a AUB150115

i get no google hits on that part number.

me/ i'd stuff whatever gr2 bolt fit in the and figure out how to lock it in.. whether I had to fab something with a headless bolt.. or whatever.. be creative... it just needs shear protection.. and needs to stay in till sheared.. then be able to be easilly removed and repalced... so if you make something.. stick to those rules.. AND make up a handfull of them at the same time.. :)

Hey Soundguy , I went out last night to my local Tractor Supply and picked up four 4" gr. 2 2 5/8 blank shanked bolts and put one in this morning with antiseaze on it , added a lock washer and nut and bush hogged all day . All is well . thanks again . Carroll

I agree with sound guy. I buy bulk/lb grade 2 from TSC (Tractor supply) for Cub Snow Thrower plus my PTO driven PHD (also TSC variety). I have to deal with a very rocky
(field stone) soil for the PHD plus frozen Horse Turds and hidden 2 B stone in the Winter months.
Grade 2's have worked out very well, although much more frustrating with the very frequent breaking during PHD (post hole drilling).
regards,
Steve
