used my 800 until firewood was done in mid November or so.Well I go to start it this spring and apparently clutch is froze up or something.Cannot shift into gear.Seems like the clutch is not disengaging.Worked fine when I stopped using it.Should I try to pop it gear by going downhill and then stepping on brake to free it up ? Thanks

Believe this is semi common. Supposed to out a block on the pedal to keep it disengaged for longer sitting periods. I think this happened on our 1720 a while ago. It has been years so I don't remember so well. I believe we did something like you are talking about. Shocked the clutch to break it free.

A more controlled way to break it loose, is to pull it with another tractor. Put it in gear, then slowly pull it while depressing the clutch pedal. (engine off)

So if it worked fine last season do you think just pulling it will break it free ? I had it in 4th gear being pulled depressing and letting off on the clutch but it did not break free.Is there a gear that is best for this ? I have a big enough tractor to pull it around the field.

Downhill without annything infront of your tractor ........put it in the highest gear and depress clutchpedal start it ....then depress clutchpedal and hard apply brakes in a jurky motion ....keep clutchpedal depressed at all times. If this do not work . KILL ENGINE ASAP ! REMEMBER safety first !

My brakes are not the best.I did drive it around in 4th gear while stepping on and off the good brake. Are there any videos on splitting the tractor to get to the clutch ?

block clutch and let her set a couple days. sometimes they just pop loose on their own.

ps tthat, keep clutch blocked, put her in high gear.. hookup a mower to pto shaft, have pto engaged. lock brakes down.. weak or not.

now set in seat and use a screwdriver to just keep bumping the starter over.. 1 blip at a time. if you are lucky and living right. 5-10 blips and she will break free. the pto load really helps. so does a hot battery.

LOL on the pto. That crapped out last summer.Grinds trying to engage last year. Was popping out of pto while bushhogging.Somebody said that a bearing may be bad for pto and to take side cover off .Did not get to do that yet.Has anybody heard of this before ? Will keep working on it.

good grief. if you are gonna let them go bad and not fix them.. why not sell the tractor?

pto walking out of gear is USUALLY ( not always ) a thrust issue.

with engine off, grab the pto shaft and see if there is in / out play. if there is.. that is thrust play and is why it walks out of engagement. this will let the splned coupler and rear splines wear and make it where it will need to be split to be repair if you let this go.

if it is just a thrust issue so far, then it is usually the bearing or a slipped split ring or wear ring. occasionally the split rings slip out often enough to damage the bearing carrier. if carrier and rings are good just toss in a new seal.. if not. new assy is 110$ usually.

ont he grind to engage. might indicate sticking clutch or if a dual clutch.. way past usefull lifespan.

post back ( ps.. what trans you have? )

4 speed with under/overdrive=12 speed. The pto went out at the end of the season right before firewood season. If I had a heated barn to work in I would have fixed that over the winter. The over/under drive has not worked in probably 30 yrs.Had a guy look at it and he said parts are not available so it would not pay to split the tractor. But if I have to split it I may look into that issue. My father had an engine kit put in it in the mid 80"s.The tractor only has 1900 orig hrs but was smoking back then. The engine kit fixed that problem and the tractor is in nice shape and is a bear.

well... most parts for the combo shermans CAN be found easilly... OR you could switch it out for a standard input shaft worst case...

heated barn should be no issue. takes 5m to snatch the pto assy out the back of the tractor...

YIPPEEEEEE !!!!!! It broke free.Apparently I just did not ride it around enough.Had my sone get on it and ride with clutch depressed. It broke free after 2 trips around the field.

Now the pto issue.Yes I do have push pull play on the pto shaft. Is this someting that can be repaired from the back or does the tractor have to be taken apart for the pto to work properly again ? Thanks so far for the input.

if the sliding couple has not been chewed up too bad, you can pull the pto assy out the rear and rebuild or repalce with a new 110$ assy and gasket.
