A few months ago I came into possession of a 1981 Ford 755 Backhoe, It hadn't been started in several years so the first thing to do was try and get it running enough to load it on the trailer. After checking all of the fluid levels and putting a couple batteries on it along with 2 sets of jumper cables connected to my old Ford F350 I tried to crank it over.the starter would just spin and not engage so I pulled it and freed up the drive bendix returned it to the tractor this time after a few minutes the engine finally started but ran poorly I figured it still had enough old diesel in it to effect the 5 gallons that I had poured in. But it would move under its own power even though just barely. It took nearly half an hour to coach it up the ramps of the lowboy trailer.
After un loading it I started working on it.
The guy who more or less gave it to me told me it had a few things wrong with it that he knew of one of which was his son had removed the injection pump and worked on it himself. the Alternator didn't work , It had an exhaust leak at the turbo and none of the gauges worked
Well I replaced the idler pulley for the fan belt and repaired a couple of broken wires to fix the alt. made a compression seal to fix the exhaust leak, and corrected the timing on the injection pump now at least it would start right up and after getting fully warmed the engine would reach about 2/3 rds full RPM I figured it might get better as time went along after all of the old fuel was out of the system. It has to some extent and gets better each time I use it
However it still barely can pull itself in anything but low gear and does not even move in high gear I don't need anything but low for what I am doing anyway though.
I have a question though about the function of the "T" handle on the side of the steering column the tag is mostly torn off and about all I cam make out is the word Transmission. I don't know if that needs pushed in for travel or pulled out.

After I got it running a little better I made a quick disconnect for the hoe bucket

If you hoe has a SIMMS injection pump on it.. don't forget its self contained oil system.. you have to add and change the oil in it..
Just use regular engine oil.. whatever you use in the engine.
Drain plug on the bottom, full plug on the side and fill plug on top.
You said the rpm's were not up to par? make sure the lever is hitting the stop screw at full throttle.

that's the transmission dump control, in should be normal use, but follow the cable down to the side of the tranny and be sure that the valve hasn't stuck in the out position ( or part of the way)

Thanks I couldn't remember what it was used for, it had been 20 years since I had borrowed the same machine to dig a storm shelter
the "T" handlle is stuck about 1/4to 3/8" from being all the way down so I suspect it is partially dumping the transmission.

The "T" handle was stuck partially in the pulled position. I managed to free it up so the valve now works the tractor has a lot more pushing power now.
Still slow to rev up but after it has been running for about an hour the power curve seems to be a lot better and it will just about reach full RPM. Each time I use it it gets a little better

Wow I can hardly believe it has been 3 years since I've posted anything about my 755 backhoe. over the years I made a 12" narrow trench bucket for it. to dig a trench for a water line and the perimeter of my green house

Also around here I need a forklift more than a loader I could have just added removable forks to the loader bucket but that would not have given me the virsitility and lifting capacity I wanted
So I made a fork carriage out of some Caterpillar rock skirts for a large excavator then slid a pair of class 3 forks on it the carriage is 7 feet wide and everyone who has ever ran a forklift knows how handy having a wide carriage can be for carrying long materials

As handy as the fork carriage is there are times when I need to lift things A LOT HIGHER than the loader will lift so I added an electric hoist and a 26 ft Gin pole to the back of the carriage when I started building my shop
