Why would the 5 speed transmission come out of 5th gear when going downhill or when there is no load against the transmission on the Ford 600/800 series tractors? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Thought I posted a reply to this but it's gone now. So excuse me if this is a duplicate.

I've saw this several times over the years. The gears are cut to hold themselves engaged. Too many times of grinding it into gear causes the teeth to round off. Then there's nothing holding it engaged. Just guessing though.....

There are some expert Ford tractor guys on here. Hopefully we'll hear a definite answer. :)

Thanks sounds like a good guess. Yes you did reply on my other post. Forgot there was a vintage Ford forum, found after first post

Oh, sorry, I didn't even notice that.....

Hopefully a couple of the Ford Gurus will chime in. Soundguy or RickyB are both very knowledgeable.

As mentioned, most likely bearing and gear wear. Won't hurt to check detent plungers, just because it is easy.

If trans n gears, fix is full trans rebuild, or new used trans.

Bandaid fix is a bunji cord holding the shifter in gear, but not so hard its passing detents.
