My Ford 5000 Diesel has a bad battery. When I try to a charge the battery, the tractor tries to start on its own as soon as the battery has enough charge. This happens even with the key in the off position. Is this a switch problem or might it be something else? I need help!

Re: Ford 5000

. . . I need help!

They say that is the first step! :D

Seriously, it sounds like the starter solenoid is stuck. Change that, and you should be OK.

As Bigfoot says, or it could be the starter switch.

yep.. solenoid contacts probably welded due to trying to start with a weak battery in the first place.

rap the solenoid with a hammer and see what a jump test does.

be safe.. trans in neutral, clutch blocked.. etc.

use an ohm meter too if needed to find what is shorted / closed.. etc..

always could be a bad key switch.. etc...

A volt meter and a little patients will go along way.

And for starters, I'd unhook the battery and let it get a FULL charge.

Try tapping the solenoid on the starter as soundguy metioned. And then with a FULL charged and UNHOOKED battery, all you have to do is touch the cable back to the battery. If she tries to start, you know the tapping didnt work. And then a little ohm testing with a VOM is in order, as well as a little knowledge of what/where to check:thumbsup:
