Hey Folks,

Looken at a mid 60's Hi/Lo 4sd Gas 4000 Ford with schwartz loader, 3 point snow bucket, grabfork and dirt bucket for $7,500 OBO.

Has anyone ever had any experience with this type tractor?

Just like to be able to lift a 1000-1500lb hay bale every so often and till tree rows now and then.

Thanx! in advance for any/all replies

In general, that's a "good" tractor. The later model 3-cylinder 4000's were "great" tractors. So long as it's in decent shape, it SHOULD do what you describe as your needs. In my immediate area, that's a $4000 (or under) tractor, not including the loader or accessories, provided it's in average to good condition. Gas being somewhat less desirable than diesel. Just the loader alone usually adds $1500 to $2000 here.

I may be mistaken, but check the trans on that 4000 again...during the 60's (early to mid anyway), Fords only came with 4 speed or a "tower" 5 speed. The tower trans had a 2 stage clutch for use with the PTO.
As to whether it can do the job, I wouldn't go for it unless it has the the 2 stage PTO clutch, otherwise the PTO runs off the trans resulting in some "surprises' once in a while if you aren't used to them. BobG in VA

The 3 cyl. 4000's came out as late 1965 models, would have had the 8x2 tranny. The 4 cyl. 4000 was also produced in early 1965.

I had a 64 4000, 4cyl, 4 speed gas w/ loader. It did have live pto (2 stage). I baled hay with it, but did square bales, so can't say if it would left that much. But was a good utility tractor. Here is a picture http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/...0d1115060708-tc40da-here-642568-blue-008a.jpg. It was a great tractor for me. I wanted a BH and a more modern tractor. I sold it in may of '05 for $4200. I think that asking price, even with the other attachments seems high.

Here is another comparison shoot http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/...8019d1115049874-tc40da-here-642448-blue3a.jpg

Good to know that the 4 spd also had the 2 stage clutch. Our next door neigbor (dairy farmer) bought one of the "new" Fords in the early 60's and it had the tower 5 spd with the 2 stage clutch....My bad on the 4 speed...Bobg in Va

Hey Folks,

I went and actually looked at the tractor today. The guy could'nt be there so I could'nt drive it.

I was hoping you could digest what I saw/found out and give me a little feedback if/when you had a chance.

So here goes ...

The tires have been filled for weight.

The fella said over the phone that he's lifted upwards of 1800lb bales with her.

I saw zero welds/cracks anywhere on the loader or on the tractor for that matter.

All the hoses looked to be in exceptional shape.

He said he'd kept it inside and it looked it.

The loader is run by a pump mounted on the front of the tractor. The guy said it's OE.

He has a 2 hose hyd rear blade (not part of the deal but on there) .
The hoses are mounted to a box that looks OE just forward/under the seat.

It is infact a Hi/Lo four speed.

I saw a couple tall levers just in front of the seat?

All in all I'd say it looked in great shape.

Anyway considering what I saw today is there anything anyone would want to add?

Lastly ... if I can take here for a spin tomorrow is there anything else I should keep my eye out for?

Thanx!! in advance for any info you can provide.

I'd hope it has power steering with a loader, if it is the 3 cyl. 4000, it'll suck the gas down fast and furious.

Not all ford 5-spd's are dual clutch... it could be dual or single.. just have to look at the tractor model #. For instance int he 801 series.... a model 851 has a single clutch 5spd.. an 861 has a dual clutch 5-spd.

The pre 65 4000 / 4cyl were just updated 801 series tractors.

The box under the seat should be the hydraulic valve body. It has been a while but my Ford 4000 was newer and had two levers under the seat you had to use to run the Ford loader on it. It was a pain in the backside having to reach under the seat to work the loader which is why I traded it in on the TN65:)

I like the old Fords and the 4000 is a good size tractor for most people. It isn't too big and not too small. Good luck with whatever you decide
