Hey Everyone, I would like your opinions.
1983 Ford 340A tractor. 3000+ hours. My father in law bought it, and I have been struggling to get it "useable"
History of what I did, I flushed the fuel tank, changed the fuel filter (had rust and sediments on both sides of the filter medium), completely drained and re primed the diesel injection system. put a new battery on it. Also changed the transmission fluid (which was full of water). previous owner just changed engine oil. go figure...
When he bought it, it had so little power that it would not even move in high range. we loaded it on a trailer in low range, and it barely made it up the ramps without bogging down. After all the work I did, with fresh diesel in it, now you can use high range, but you really have to have a heavy foot to get it going. Its not user friendly at all. We have several other Ford tractors, and none of them are as gutless as this one.
My question is, do you think that I should try and replace the injectors? I'm just now sure how much damage so much crap in the fuel lines will do to injectors, or for that measure, the injection pump.
As far as compression, I haven't tested it, but it cranks fairly easily now.
Just to give you an idea of the power issue, if you raise the front bucket up at idle, the tractor will bog down and die.
