Good evening.

Newbie with a 1974 Ford 3400 3-cyl diesel industrial tractor that won't start. I replaced the battery, fuel filter and fuel. Turns but doesn't catch even with ether. I suspect not enough compression. Front loader and backhoe are dug in, so pull starting is not an option.

What would be my next step in debugging and repairing?

Thanks

Welcome to TBN!

Had it been running? When was the last time it ran?
You could check the valve adjustment first. 0.014-15" intake, 0.018-19" exhaust

Thanks for your reply. Glad to be here.
It had been sitting for a few months. Previous to that, running okay. Where would I check valve adjustment? Sorry, really a newbie to engine maintenance/repair.

Isn't there someone locally who is knowledgeable and can come over to help you?

Well, here is a video that is pretty good on this engine. You will probably need the cork valve cover gasket (C7NN6584B)

In that predicament I would check to see if the fuel is getting to the injectors at least. I know either should do it but anything can happen. I would also make sure the kill choke is not on. Other than that I would have to get a professional

U definitely have to make sure that fuel is making it TO the injection pump inlet..
There is a bleed screw by the nameplate on the pump..
Its a double screw, with a 5/16 wrench needed ..
U loosen the screw and spin the engine.. fuel should shoot out of the bleed screw with no bubbles..
Once u get fuel there, tighten the bleed screw and move onto the injectors..
Follow the steel lines up to the injectors that are in the head..
Loosen the steel lines a couple of turns.. no need to take them off..
Pull the throttle to wide open and crank the engine..
A few 8 second blasts from the starter should produce some fuel at the loosened lines at the injectors..
If nothing.. time to call in the pros..
