Ford 1710 Starting Problem

Hi All- I am stumped by an electrical issue on my 1710. I have verified that the battery, solenoid, fuses and starter all work. When I turn the ignition switch to start, I hear the click of the solenoid engaging and then the power shuts off. If I disconnect and reconnect the battery, it resets, regardless of the time passed. It's like the surge to turn the starter is cutting out a circuit breaker. Can't figure out what is wrong. Any suggestions?

It sounds like you're dealing with a high resistance in your circuit. A battery can measure full voltage yet fail to produce adequate current under load. Charge it and have it load tested. Clean the battery terminals and the cable ends. Reinstall cables and tighten securely. Track the ground wire to its connection point on the frame. Clean and tighten there. After going through this entire process try starting your tractor and let us know how it went. This is a really good starting point from which to begin troubleshooting.

Had a 1710 with starting issues like yours. There is a metal cover on the left side of the top of the gearshift/ range shift lever top plate The cover is round and covers up a wiring harness,one of the wires goes to the neutral safety switch that means that you have to make sure that this is working or you can't start tractor. Tractor has been traded 6 years ago ,but I definitely remember the problem. Hope this helps. The wire on mine had rubbed against the other wires in the cover and actually was broken, if I remember correctly, the rear lights wiring harnesses runs through this to the rear lights.
