JFS, thats a lifesaver! I'll PM you about the pdf manual, thank you! And turning the knob under the seat does have the effect of making the lift arms raise and lower faster, but didn't make a difference in the strength of the lift. Also, clarification on use of deisel. . .the service manager said to flush the hydraulic reservoir only with deisel only, do not run the tractor until the deisel had been emptied and replaced with hydraulic.

OK, that will wash out that specific area which may make the overall process easier. But you still are going to have contaminated fluid in the hydralic circuits and there may be some areas that will catch some diesel. I believe you still will need to do one flush at least will flushing hydraulic oil to get out more water and the remaining diesel.

Update: With my work schedule I haven't had a chance to work on the tractor but I have a vacation day next Wednesday and hope to do so then!

JFS I plan on changing the fluid again after a few hours of use once I get the lift operating again (man, this is getting quite expensive, but it'll be worth it when it works!). And thanks again for the manual, it opened great in pdf just like you said!

I'll post an update once I get the fluid changed and let you all know how it goes.

I am an 1710 owner.

Yes, first you unscrew the bolt on the tube labled #1.

Then undo the four bolts labled #2 to get to the screen.

I am betting when you do, you'll find your screen is badly contaminated. Mine was- and I don't think mine was cleaned in 20 years. Rinse it out with gasoline (swirl around and it comes clean quickly) and then put in back together and put in fresh hydralic fluid, and it will work like new.

That's what happened to me- just like what you describe-milky fluid and poor lift capability. Cleaned the filter and put in new fluid, and it worked 1000 percent better.

Good luck.

James,

The picture that you re posted is actually my 1700 which is perfectly okay. Does 1710 have inlet screen and looks exactly like mine? if so OP can look up a few thread I started that goes step by step thru the same process.

JC,

ps. NH website does not show inlet screen.

I was surprised. I thought all the tens had the screw-on filter.

Update: Got my 1710 hydraulic system flushed and has clean oil, finally! Flushed it out with diesel and it ran clear. And I must mention that when I pulled the right-hand drain plug at the rear under the lift, there was about 2 inches of black sludge that came out, but everything flushed clean with the diesel. James. . .I wish I had that screen on my 1710 to clean, but I don't think the 1710 has it.

However, the lift's performance did NOT improve!! And I'm sooo surprised because last time it performed awesome with the fresh, clean fluid. Getting desperate now!

I hope cavitation of the pump due to inlet condition did not lead to pump damage. That is a real possibly now. do you have a loader? and if so, then does it work? I'd make sure to check all and everything on the inlet of the pump before working on the pump.

Yes, it has a loader and the loader has worked great during the whole ordeal. How do I go about checking the inlet of the pump? And I'm thinking since the loader is working great, perhaps it is a problem with the lift itself? Also, not sure if this makes a difference but the RPMs have to be around 2000 before the lift arms raise and lower.

I did not mean just "inlet of the pump" . I meant inlet condition, that means all the restriction that might be on the inlet side of the pump, such as filter, screen ans such. whatever physically that could effect flow. You should be able to raise your lift even at the lowest idle rpm. If you have to raise your rpm very high (2000) just to lift then pump is not pumping well due to wear or pump shaft seal leakage or internal seals. Unless someone has a better idea but I think your're needing a pump overhaul. Does you loader work at Idle rpm?
