Hi,

Very inexperienced old tractor owner.

Trying to get the rim off the center piece of the rear wheel to replace it. I am not familiar with the kind of nuts holding the piece on. I know it's a castle nut and I have to try to remove the cotter pin but what is the piece of metal folded around the nut and what kind socket takes it off? (Pic attached)

Heavily rusted. Been soaking them for 3 days with PB Blaster. Was lucky to get wheel off tractor that way, lugs came out easy. Rim is rusted out, that's why I am replacing it.

And can anyone confirm the rim size is 24"x10" for a Ford 1700? Not sure how to measure the width of the rim. I think its 10" which unfortunately is more than twice as much to replace as the 8" width. $350 compared to $140 from what I found online.

Thanks for any help. Just trying to fix the old thing up and keep it going. It runs great after 50 years, but needs work.

I see the castle nut and cotter pin, but I don’t see metal around the nut. There is only the cotter and nut, metric. Heating the nut is probably the nest step if PB Blaster doesn’t do the trick.

I don’t see those prices for the rims, but you measure the width at the bead. That is where the side dips down from the outside wall.
I will look tomorrow on my desktop for the rim.

Thank you!

The metal I was asking about is on the right side of the nut in the picture. It looks like, to me, it is bent around that side of the nut. But maybe I don't know what I am looking at.

Thanks again!

Francis, the wheel is a 10 x 24 wheel. In your picture, RH side, I think you are referring to the tails of the cotter pin. Also, underneath the nut is a lockwasher.
Two aftermarket rims, second one with hardware. I would torch the nuts/bolts and go from there if you have a cutting torch.

Thank you again. You have been a huge help. Luckily I do have a neighbor with torches. Soon as the weather here clears up a bit I will get to working on it.

Your knowledge is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I thought I was good at searching the internet but the links you both provided are much less expensive than what I found myself.

I'm glad parts are still available though. The rim is really falling apart from rust. The other side has none. Don't know why.

Francis
