Fluid choice for a backhoe

I posted this in the Attachments forum, then noticed this category so thought I'd ask this forum as well.

I just picked up a used Woods 7500 backhoe. It has it's own tank and PTO pump, does not use the tractor fluids. As with all used items, I like to change the fluids along with checking the bolt torque, greasing, and so on.

For the fluids, the manual says there are several different recommended oil types:
SAE Hydraulic Transmission Fluid.................All Temperatures
Type "A" or "F" ATF..................................All Temperatures
SAE 30-30W...........................................90de g F and above
SAE 20-20W...........................................35-90deg F
SAE 10-10W...........................................35de g F and below

Hydraulic based fluids -- either the SAE or one of the ATFs seems to make sense for use in a Hydraulic system, rather than motor oil.

What is the difference, if any between the SAE, the ATF-A, and the ATF-F Hyd fluids, especially for an application like this?
How would those compare to motor oil?
Why use motor oil instead of a hydraulic fluid?
Does it matter?

Don't know the exact answer to your question ... however, I will say that I have a friend with a Bobcat Trac-hoe mini excavator and, as per his machine's manual, he uses SAE 30W motor oil and it works great and has for the 15 years he has owned it ... and he bought it used.

Can you determine the fluid in the hyd system now?

You can use any of that fluid at the limitations stated.

Our Power-Tracs have used motor oil as a hyd fluid for about 25 years and works just fine, maybe better than most other fluids.

I'd use tractor trans/hydraulic fluid and not worry.

my woods 6500 is running UTF in it. walmart utf. same as my tractors hyds / tranny/diffy setups.

FYI.. it was common practice to run 30w engine oil and 40w engine oil in heavy equipment hydrostatic trannies. I have a bunch of 60's and 70's era cat equipment int he shop yard i work at, their original manuals all spec 30w in the TC's
