I need to replace the V belts on my Ford new Holland 918 H flail mower. The specs call for a 5/8 x 48.8 cm belt. That’s obviously a hard belt to find. Am I better off going with the 48 inch or 49?

49" should work fine. Look at the adjuster on the mower, you should be able to determine if you have more adjustment to tighten the belt. If you have quite a bit, then the 49" is the one
5/8" belts are "B" belts. A 49" outside diameter is a B46. A B49 belt has an outside diameter of 52". Easy to find online. I found I had to crank the tension pretty high on my flail mower to keep the belts from slipping and self destructing. You can also buy a matched set that are exactly the same length. Apparently most belts can have minute length differences and thus the tension would not be exactly the same. I didn't find this to be a problem though.
