My new (used) alamo flail came with a set of rear wheels & laminated tires. With there being a roller in back, what purpose do they really serve? Just extra stability?

They're optional equipment on most flails, probably not necessary unless you're going for the golf course look. By design, the farther the flail pivots back on the roller, the higher the cut. Gauge wheels prevent the flail from rocking back through uneven patches, especially in reverse gear.

They would also help with turns as they would help keep it from digging in and they are also very handy when backing up too.

i have an old mott 6' flail mower. i've wanted to add the wheels and remove the roller, make it easier to make sharp turns. with the roller it has to slide on the ground when making sharp turns. i always raise the mower, with wheels i wouldn't have to raise it for the turns.

i'd remove the roller and keep the wheels.

Wheels are good on flat land , a roller is better on anything that has undulations , wheel ruts , drains etc . The roller will carry the cutters over these imperfections , wheels wont and the result is scalping . And it is obvious what happens to such narrow wheels carrying so much weight on wet , soft ground .

My alamo just has the roller and it works great. With the weight of the roller it also helps to level any divits you might have... and as far as turning goes... let it slide. It doesn't tear anything up that I have noticed.

I guess it might be good to leave them on. What would be really nice is a way to make them hydraulically adjustable, however, I'm not sure it would give me any big advantage.

not worried about tearing anything up, just seems like a lot of side forces on the 3pt hitch and frame of an old mower.

I just bought an Alamo front mounted flail, and the wheels are definitely needed for this application. Like you, I can't see the point of having them on a rear mount that already has a roller.
By the way, I am searching to buy a set of Alamo wheels if you are interested in selling.
Thanks.

you can check with flailmaster for the wheels as I believe the front wheels and rear wheels are identical.

If you don't want those wheels on your mower, mount them on your rear blade/box blade/landscape rake. Lots of folks would love to have them for that purpose.

I have a Peruzzo Puma 1800 with gage wheels, but the wheels are mounted on the front (direction of travel) of the mower. Basically allow you to use them to set the front height of the mower instead of raising/lowering your 3pt. Then raise/lower the roller to set the rear of the mower.

Jdlaw, could we get a pic if your setup sometime? Do the gauge wheels track the tractor rears?

I don't have it mounted right now, but here is a link to the website of the dealer that shows how it is set up both front and rear and without the wheels. Yes, the wheels track the tractor rears.

Iowa Farm Equipment -- Peruzzo Puma Offset Series Flail Mowers

I actually bought another flail to use, and am selling the Puma 1800. The Peruzzo is a super flail, but is too big for my tractor. I cut a lot of thick and tall pasture grass, and with 116 heavy duck foot hammers my pto hp just wasn't enough. However for my lawn or large shorter grass expanses, it left them like carpet.
