Flail Mower Flail adjustment.......

I just got my new flail mower, have never had or used one before, was out geting it ready for a job I have this weekend. I want to adjust it for about a 2" cut. The manual says to adjust the skids and then to set the roller so the bottom of the roller is the same height as the skids. I thought the mower pretty much rode on the roller? If not, then what's the purpose of the roller? Will the skids/shoes leave tracks on the grass? Need to get this figured out by this weekend /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
